Review

"An engaging, informative, and enjoyable history of interaction design that helps us appreciate the contributions of some incredible people who shaped this corner of the design field. What fun!"--Dan Boyarski, Professor and Head, School of Design, Carnegie Mellon University "This original and sound book should have a profound effect on design for digital media." Mark D. Gross , Design Machine Group, Department of Architecture, University of Washington "This original and sound book should have a profound effect on design for digital media."--Mark D. Gross, Design Machine Group, Department of Architecture, University of Washington "Improvisational Design is a provocative, challenging book for designers confronted not with just multimedia, but with multi-dimensional design problems. Suguru Ishizaki offers designers a framework for rigorously considering these dimensions as creatively as we have considered visual solutions. His insights are both valuable and timely."--Bill Hill, President, MetaDesign North America "A different approach to designing -- one that considers it a continuous and dynamic activity -- which is all the more relevant to the range of digital communication designers today."--Dan Boyarski, Professor and Head, School of Design, Carnegie Mellon University "Design discourse has been spinning its wheels for years, trying to stay relevant in the context of a digital revolution. Suguru Ishizaki solves the conundrum by tearing down established design processes and rebuilding them on the adaptable foundation of performance and improvisation. The result offers designers an adaptable approach to their craft well suited for the frenetic digital world. This is more than a treatise; it's CPR for contemporary design theory."--Eric Eaton, Principal, Deliberate Design, and author of *Design Whys: Designing Web Site Interface Elements*

Product Description

Traditional visual design expresses information in fixed forms, such as print or film, so the message can be stored or distributed. With interactive media and continuously updated information, communication entails a new, more dynamic set of design problems. In this book Suguru Ishizaki offers a theoretical framework for dealing with the challenges and opportunities of what he calls "dynamic design." His approach incorporates a community of collaborating agents that control design solutions in response to a changing context. He illustrates his ideas with several examples, such as expressive e-mail and responsive maps. The book will be of particular interest to interaction designers, visual designers, software engineers, and human-computer interaction experts.

Object Oriented Designing 22 Feb 2006
By Aaron Siegel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Ishizaki presents an articulate description of decentralized dynamic design systems in a manner easy enough for a complete luddite to understand. The book makes no direct technical references (although it does present algorithms in a formal language invented by the author consisting of English words), but the fundamentals of the design process are easily implemented on any design project. The chapters go quite quickly, and I found myself highlighting at least one paragraph per page. If you are a designer working with any dynamic information system, you should definitely invest in this book. I've been practicing many of these fundamentals without knowing about it, and now I have the knowledge and terminology to articulate the ideas behind my projects.
