Product Description

Review

'The accurate assessment of working memory difficulties and the implementation of appropriate strategies is very pertinent to meeting the learning needs of pupils with special educational needs (SEN). This publication provides practical examples, case studies, tips and pointers to enable practitioners in education to support children and young people to become successful independent learners. Most certainly a worthwhile read for those involved in working with diverse learners' -
Anita Devi, Senior Lecturer, The Centre for Special Needs Education and Research (CeSNER), School of Education,
The University of Northampton

Product Description

Your working memory is the information your brain stores for a short period of time, it is your brain's post-it note if you like, and how much information you can remember has a huge influence on how well you do at school, and beyond.

By understanding a child's working memory, you will be able to support their learning at school, and their concentration. Better working memory can be particularly useful to children with conditions where poor working memory is thought to be an underlying factor. Such conditions include:

- dyslexia

- dyscalculia

- speech and language difficulties

- developmental coordination disorders (motor dyspraxia)

- ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)

- autistic spectrum disorders

This book explains how to spot problems early, and how to work with children to improve their working memory, therefore increasing their chances of success in the classroom. It also explains the theory behind working memory.

Underpinned by rigorous research and written in a highly accessible style, this book will appeal to practitioners, parents and students as an essential guide to helping their students fulfil their maximum potential.

Not what it promises 15 Sep 2011
By Julie H
Format:Paperback
I was really excited to find this book as I thought it would really help me find techniques and tactics that we could do with my son who has learning difficulties. It gives a pretty clear overview of each of the different types of learning difficulties but tactics where in very short supply. I was then really irritated to find that the answer was a product that the author was plugging pretty fiercely in the book as the answer. She clear has some affiliation to the product and when I searched for reviews of the product online, the only place I could find any was a group of mums who described it as boring and annoying for the children.

All in all, I suggest saving your money. I also purchased Help for the Struggling Student at the same time by Mimi Gold and it is the exact opposite in that it is full of easy to use exercises that help the child develop different strategies for their own learning.

Everyone involved in teaching should read this book. It's easy to understand, comprehensive and provides important strategies for teaching students with working memory problems. It's too easy to assume that someone is lazy or inattentive. After reading this book you'll be much wiser!

This is a very informative book for those interested in learning more about working memory and its implications both in the classroom and in the home. I found the cognitive profiles very interesting and look forward to reading the book a second time.
