Our Literacy co-ordinator actually bought this at school and all I can say is it is brilliant!! It had got loads of stories in and differentiated sheets for all ability levels. The LA children get simple questions about the title and author while the HA sheets looks at making sure children are infering the information! I am an NQT and wish i had bought it earlier!!

This is one of a series of comprehension workbooks for children at KS1 and KS2. This book is for ages 8-9, so Year 4. The book contains a series of different comprehension texts – including fiction, non -fiction and poetry. Each text is followed by three different worksheets, aimed at different ability levels. Those marked with a cat are for children working confidently at Level 2, the next worksheets – marked with a picture of a dog – are for those children working towards a Level 3 and the highest ability worksheets, rabbit, are for children working confidently at Level 3. The workbook contains an individual record sheet, so you can mark off your child’s achievements and get an idea of which level they are working at and there is also a CD-ROM, which contains all the texts and exercises included in the book. This can be used on a whiteboard, or photocopied for individual use. I think it is best to photocopy the texts your child is working from (assuming you are using this at home), so your child is not flicking backwards and forwards between the text and the questions. If you do not wish them to know which worksheet level they are on, it might be a good idea to print that out too, so as not to dent confidence if they are on the lower level. However, the levels are useful, because you can go back and do different worksheets as your child improves; or, indeed, lower the level if they are finding something difficult. Comprehension can be a hard skill to master, especially when your child has to infer things from the text, and this book gives ample practice in the various types of questions and texts they will come across.

A useful book. Use as a dip in or for those emergency lessons! You might need the Year 5 book if your class is high ability.
