Review

'Improving Changeover Performance is the first book since Shingo that genuinely extends understanding of changeover issues. It challenges the widely held belief that application of the SMED system alone will always lead to significant and sustainable improvement....It is genuinely insightful and useful for senior managers..It works well as an academic text...this is by far the most comprehensive changeover text yet available.'
IMechE Journal of Engineering Manufacture, Vol 216, B

Product Description

'Improving Changeover Performance' is essential reading for managers, engineers and improvement practitioners working in manufacturing industries. It will also prove invaluable to original equipment manufacturers and postgraduates and academic researchers alike.

Increasing importance is being placed on responsive, flexible manufacture in multi-product industrial environments. The ability to changeover production facilities both quickly and to a high standard is a key component of just-in-time and lean manufacturing paradigms, which are increasingly being adopted as businesses strive to compete in today's volatile and congested markets.

Currently industry frequently adopts the SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) system, a well-established shop floor method to improve changeovers. This book takes a major step beyond the SMED system, by describing in much greater detail than hitherto the potential role of engineering design, of both substantive and non-substantive nature, to enhance changeovers. It also clearly sets out what better changeover performance can contribute to business competitiveness, and describes the many pitfalls that an improvement initiative can face.

Provides overall methodology for changeover improvementIncorporates design into SMED system Recommended by the IMechE Journal of Engineering Manufacture

5.0 out of 5 stars Way Beyond SMED!, 3 Nov 2011
This review is from: Improving Changeover Performance (Hardcover)
Although this is an academic book - see the pages of references at the end of each chapter, it is an excellent update and movement beyond SMED.

It is also great to see examples from industries outside of Metal pressing!

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Improving Changeover Performance (Hardcover)
This is an interesting and rather unusual book. Unusual in the sense that it is written in an academic style with many references to prior literature. Overall this is a strength of the book; unlike many improvement books where no attempt is made to qualify statements, at least here an effort is made to validate propositions by numerous references to literature, however, the tradeoff is it can make for a bit of a dry read at times.

The book sets out to convince the reader that Shingo's SMED methodology isn't everything and should be treated as but one tool in the quest to improve changeovers. In particular, the authors emphasise the role of design changes in the improvement process.

The point is a good one as SMED is often percieved as the only improvement tool for changeover reduction. The authors introduce some useful tools such as the "Reduction-In" strategy and design rules for changeover making the book a good contibution to the changeover field.

Ultimately though I found the "SMED isn't everything" message a bit too pervasive throughout the text. In trying to prove the point, the book becomes a bit too repititious. For me it is more a thoughtful critique than useful practitioner guide and for that reason I have given it a good rather than excellent rating. Well worth a read if you are interested in the subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful, but not light reading., 27 Aug 2005
This review is from: Improving Changeover Performance (Hardcover)
If you spend the time reading through this book properly it will give you lots of useful advice on Improving Changeover Performance, as the name suggests. However, it doesn't use the almost anecdotal style of some other books on the subject, but rather presents theory, analysis, and application.
