Mah Jong - the chattering of the sparrows.
At present "Improve Your Mah Jong" is like gold dust in Hong Kong - not easy to find and many of us are searching as it is the essential guide for all learners and players of the game.
Its presentation is practical and with ring binding it can lie on one's lap and be used to match tiles to set hands, each one being clearly set out in colour and with a number matching an index at the back of the book.
The index too is good for reference as it lists the different types of special hands; suits, dragons with suits, winds and dragons with suits, winds with suits. It also has columns with helpful tips and hand value and fishing scores.
At the back there is a ready reckoner for scoring which would need to be explained by an experienced player but once understood is a useful standard for practice.
Mah Jong is an adaptable game, rather like Monopoly, in that players are apt to bend the rules to suit their play and to what they most enjoy. I have played three types of Mah Jong; Chinese with seventeen tiles, British Club style and Western style both with a base of thirteen tiles. This book makes a good solid base of rules for all these games and with its sections on definitions can settle any arguments on play or at the very least give direction on what should be done.
I strongly recommend this books to all enthusiasts of the game and to anyone who has always wished to play but never really knew how.

Wonderful book, would not be without it. So handy with its ring binder and size. Clear pictures, index and instructions for both Chinese and western game. It was recommended to me and I shall be recommending to my fellow players.

My mahjong group has used this book for many years. The clear illustrations and spiral binding make it the ideal companion to the game.
