Improve Your Handwriting: Teach Yourself (Teach Yourself Home Reference)

This is the only book I have found for improving everyday handwriting. During my last job I found my own writing had become difficult for me to read. I was writing too fast and using a pencil because of the nature of my job. My letters had lost a lot of their shapes, were badly spaced and the long strokes leaned every which way. It took me surprisingly little time to understand what was wrong and to decide what changes to make (less than 3 weeks). In the past, I resorted to calligraphy books which, I now know was a mistake for everyday writing and was a contributary factor to my deteriorating style.

This book helped me to easily diagnose what went wrong and how to set about improving my writing. The book leaves you to decide what you need to do and how much effort you need to put in. For myself, I decided to go through most of the exercises and experiment with different pens. I like the fact that the training alphabet is meant to be used for a short while and then discarded for a more personal style. The samples of handwriting helped me to understand that there is more than one way of making a letter and that I was free to adopt any style that suited my hand. I still have ongoing work to do to develop my style but have now moved on from the book.

I am sure that you will find this book of interest and I recommend it whether you need to use it or just want to read it out of interest.

Even though I haven't yet used this book as much as I should, it has already improved my handwriting simply due to trying a different pen grip and a different pen!

It discusses other difficulties with handwriting too, which is good for me as I have a tremor and dyspraxia. Exercises have helped me view letters differently which is very helpful.

The authors take an unprescriptive approach which I found very helpful due to my difficultues. They say that you should find what works for you and treat you as an individual with individual needs.

This book is good, but make sure you stick with it! It is not a miracle cure and will take you to do all the work in practicing the exercises, something which I need to get back too!

A good book if like me you have untidy handwriting you want to improve. It does take time to progress through the book (I have been doing it for a couple of months and have not finished yet) so you do need patience and perseverance to get there but it is well worth it.
