Product Description

Product Description

In an irresistible invitation to lighten up, look around, and live an unscripted life, a master of the art of improvisation explains how to adopt the attitudes and techniques used by generations of musicians and actors.

Let’s face it: Life is something we all make up as we go along. No matter how carefully we formulate a “script,” it is bound to change when we interact with people with scripts of their own. Improv Wisdom shows how to apply the maxims of improvisational theater to real-life challenges—whether it’s dealing with a demanding boss, a tired child, or one of life’s never-ending surprises. Patricia Madson distills thirty years of experience into thirteen simple strategies, including “Say Yes,” “Start Anywhere,” “Face the Facts,” and “Make Mistakes, Please,” helping readers to loosen up, think on their feet, and take on everything life has to offer with skill, chutzpah, and a sense of humor.

Motivational Read! 10 July 2009
By McNibs
Format:Hardcover
Was recommended this book by a professor in entrepreneurship. Being a fan of what are described as "spiritual books" I found this one a great read. It's a small book but provides a different outlook on your approach to relationships of all kinds, encouraging you to increase the frequency of saying "yes" to networking opportunities. Do not be put off because it is viewed in this "spiritual" framework of books. I imagine it has something to offer any reader.

Discovering this book, I was delighted, it is not about "improvisation" also it can for sure be used also for that, it is about the Wisdom one can learn and apply in our everyday lifes.

A small book, lots of good advices and interesting life stories with it, magnificantly written.

I didn't know much about improv so I bought this. I get it. It's fun and I found myself copying bits of it down. Lots of good books are mentioned and Ms Madson throws in some subversive ideas to get you wondering about what, why and how you do things. A likeable tome.

Blocking comes in many forms; it is a way of trying to control the situation instead of accepting it. We block when we say no, when we have a better idea, when we change the subject, when we correct the speaker, when we fail to listen, or when we simply ignore the situation. The critic in us wakes up and runs the show. Saying no is the most common way we attempt to control the future. "e;

Giving up on perfection is the first step; the next is to stop trying to come up with something different. Striving for an original idea takes us away from our everyday intelligence, and it can actually block access to the creative process. "e;

A good improviser is someone who is awake, not entirely self-focused, and moved by a desire to do something useful and give something back and who acts upon this impulse. "e;
