Cyrtis Mayfield - the greatest writer of Soul songs of them all? 21 Nov. 2008
By Flash Thompson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This cd combines the first two records of the all-time classic group The Impressions. Curtis Mayfield was the leading figure and driving force behind the group. The man contributed so much to the soul sound of the 1960's, and was the main architect of the "Chicago" soul sound, writing songs for many others, including Jerry Butler and Major Lance. But it was his group The Impressions where everything jelled.

The first record, titled simply "The Impressions" was basically a compilation of most of the group's singles up to that time. It has a number of classic tunes, including the hit It's Alright. You can hear the style of the early song-writing of Mayfield beginning to form. The Never Ending Impressions continues the trend, with Mayfield writing even tighter, and sometimes more mature songs.

Both of these albums showcase the early part of The Impressions career ( but not too early ) where they were beginning to really come into their own and shape the course of what was to become known as Soul Music. If you like sweet harmonies and catchy tunes, all sung with power, truth and beauty, then you must get this cd.

A nice stroll down memory lane with a great singing group. Brought back the memories of the great "house parties" I grew-up going to in High school and college.

I was getting into Curtis Mayfield so I wanted to get the Impression's stuff starting with the oldest album, and seemed best to get this one that had the 1st 2 albums on there. Grand times!

The late actor-activist,Ossie Davis once opined- "Art is the highest form of creative genius available to man". The CD-The Impressions/The Never Ending Impressions is a good representative of this dictum.Originally formed in 1958,theImpressions on this disc consist of-Fred Cash,Sam Gooden and led by their incomparable, dynamic, inimitable, singer-songwriter guitarist,Curtis Mayfield; This CD with songs like "It's All Right","I'm So Proud","Little Boy Blue","Gypsy Woman",and "I Gotta Keep On Moving",paints a picture of maintaining our humanity and rejuvenating our spirit!

Incredible & Under-Appreciated Group 30 Oct. 2009

I just received this product from Amazon and may i say the delievery was prompt and product in good condition! I am so happy to have these 2 classics on cd now. The Impressions, like their genius, Curtis Mayfield, were one of the most under-appreciated groups in music history. When you realize that they had 133 songs in the US R&B charts & another 85 in the Pop charts in their incredible career, it's amazing that when i hear people discuss the greatest or most influential groups, they rarely enter the converstation!

Their songs have been covered by so many different artists from different backgrounds and genre's that it's criminal not to BEGIN the discussion of greats groups of all time with them. In my humble opinion, The Impressions and The Miracles were the best the 1960's had to offer. Both groups songs and styles would influence countless musicians around the world and encourage them to write songs full of meaning and sing those songs with harmony and joy.

The main thing that set The Impressions apart from their counterparts is that they were the first group to truly write and sing about society and its issues. I've heard them described as the "Thinking Man's/Woman's Group" and that is a perfect description. They had important and profound things to say about life, love, society, war, bigotry and the plight of those less fortunate. They were a way ahead of the curve on the "Socially Conscious" themes that would dominate music especially in the late 1960's and early to mid 1970's.

This 2 album collection is wonderfully done, the 1st album simply titled "The Impressions" is a collection of their hits up to that point released as singles. "The Never Ending Impressions" is one of their first recordings were they were actually making an album and both are loaded with hits. This group, which started out with Sam Gooden, Arthur & Richard Brooks in Tennessee would move to Chicago and add Curtis along with Jerry Butler (a genius in his own right). They would, however, find their greatest success as a trio once Fred Cash joined Sam and Curtis. It was then that they would develop their gorgeous 3 part harmonies around Mayfield's incredible songwriting skills.

This is a great buy for anyone looking to hear the music and sounds of the late 50's and early 60's that would forever change and shape music and how it was produced and perceived. It's also a glimpse of the maturing genius of one of the most influential and innovative artist of the 20th century, Curtis Mayfield. The Impressions became his platform to sharpen the skills that would make him one of the most gifted artists of all time.
