This wonderful little book captures British new town life. Laying it out in series of vignettes that highlight the variety of architectural styles present in much of suburban Britain. The good, bad, mediocre, loved, and neglected are all represented. Balancing this focus on the hard landscape Vicky turns her eye on the people portraying them with great assurance. Milton Keynes green landscape is presented beautifully; as with many new towns its importance is often missed by those who have little first hand experience of our new towns.
For me browsing this book and its myriad of images instantly transported me back to my youth in East Kilbride and the time of freedom found in these often criticised planed and manufactured towns. Green corridors and open park-lands provide freedom for children and adults alike - encouraging many to walk or cycle.
All of the images glow with the gentle tones of photographs captured on film. Reminiscent of many a treasured family album one is drawn in and captivated.
This work will only grow in value. Its true worth like so many labours of love being realised by subsequent generations who will relish the skill with which Vicky has painted Milton Keynes portrait.
