Product Description

Impossible Truth was born on tour as William was reading two books with an odd kinship while on long and lonely Midwestern drives: Barney Hoskyns Hotel California and Mike Davis The Ecology of Fear. Both center on the promise and psychosis of southern California, albeit from very different angles: Hoskyns tackles the naïve and narcissistic Laurel Canyon scene of the early seventies, while renowned social scientist Davis deals with the history of the destruction of Los Angeles, both in real and imagined disasters. The synchronistic tackling of these tomes inspired Tyler to compose a story rooted in apocalyptic expectation and bittersweet nostalgia. Or as Tyler puts it, this is my 70s singer-songwriter record; it just doesn t have any words. Impossible Truth will challenge your ideas of what an instrumental guitar record can and should be. As his friend and tour mate M.C. Taylor from Hiss Golden Messenger puts it, William will worry a phrase some tangled chordal wormhole until you are certain it s all that exists. He ll take you over the stiles, he ll love you up and down, and then he ll make you cry for the world and what we ve done to it. Willy T s got the vampire blues. And there s only one like him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Front porch heaven 12 May 2013

William Tyler is the guy you want around when you just want to chill and drift and take you places in the peace and quiet of your own company or others around you who you love and care about.
No..I'm not drunk..I just got back from seeing him support and play with Hiss Golden Messenger in Totnes last night and bought this album on the strength of it.
Beautifully crafted acoustic and electric soundscapes of swirling guitar by the Silver Jews/Lambchop frontman.
His previous album Behold The Spirit maybe even has the edge on this one - but I have to tell you - if you like Americana and the rich heritage of Nashville and the alt country movement - then this guy is the genuine article and at 33 years old, will be a big part of its future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional album 20 Mar 2014

William Tyler is an amazing guitarist and this album is a true gem of Americana at it's very best. His melodies are sublime and the instrumentation - who would have thought guitar and trombone could sound this good? - is divine. Buy it and live the dream.

It's just a lovely album. The guitar playing is absolutely superb, The melodies are involving and strong. As an entire album there's enough pace and variation to make each track stand out. If you enjoy the acoustic guitar then this is just a perfect buy. Highly recommended.

I am a guitarist (nothing like this) and appreciate those that are really great. William Tyler is great at playing and great at creating melodies and "pieces" of music. Just happened to see a facebook post about him. had a listen and immediately purchased this album and love it. If you like acoustic guitar and appreciate a great musician, then this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 26 Mar 2013
By Mick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I sort of stumbled upon this record by accident but what oh, what a happy accident it was. This is a collection of multi layered guitar pieces that just sweep you away. Some have a bit of dissonance in them as the melody and song structure start to take hold. It's really amazing to watch each song unfold. If you're even the slightest fan of instrumental acoustic guitar, you really need to check this out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fluid, pastoral, mesmerizing guitar instrumentals 23 July 2013
By Charlie Quaker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Stunningly beautiful, hypnotic drone-flow finger-picking guitar rolls. Fluid, pastoral, mesmerizingly serene Americana instrumentals. Gorgeously atmospheric slices of wavering desert heatwave mirage. References artists like Leo Kottke, Robbie Basho, Sandy Bull, John Fahey. Works well with a sunny afternoon nap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up 28 Nov 2013

I heard his music on NPR and it reminded me of early John Fahey and Michael Hedges. He is definitely right up there with those two greats when it comes to composition and subtle expression through his guitar. This is music you will want to really listen to, not just have in the background.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, incandescent guitar music. 2 Nov 2013

It's impossible to describe how a long-ish album of instrumental guitar can be so moving and catchy and unpretentious. Reminds me of that great Tom Verlaine solo guitar album, except not as minimalist. Beautiful, beautiful stuff.
