I was a De La Soul Fan.

There early stuff was great.

There new stuff is pretty much unremarkable. There are a few good moments on the album - but not enough.

By De La Soul's admission this release is a stop-gap between 'proper' studio albums. It takes the form of a hip-hop mixtape; a mixed bag of new and old material with brief spoken word interludes.

The older tracks are 'never heard before' nuggets from the recording sessions of previous De La albums and are on the whole dissapointing. The new material fares slightly better; the James Brown sampling 'You Got It' has a certain old-school charm. And the last track 'Freedom Train' is classic De La that wouldn't have sounded out of place on 2004's excellent 'The Grind Date'. But the vast majority of the cuts on here come accross as half-arsed album fillers, not the well-crafted songs we are used to. You have to wonder whether these are just a bunch of tracks that were not considered good enough for the forthcoming album. It certainly seems that way.

De La Soul have been responsible for some of the most fantastic, infectious, thought-provoking hip-hop records of all time, and 'The Grind Date' proved that they are still capable of greatness. Hears hoping that this release will prove to be a temporary blip rather than the start of a downward career trajectory. If this CD was by any other hip-hop artist I would probably give it three stars, but because its by De La Soul, and we KNOW they can do SO much better, it will have to be a two.

Alright, this is De La Soul and as such it deserves at least some respect - after all they still lay verses on this album (well - sort of album) and to the many of their loyal fans they're the best at doing just that. With that both established and in mind: The Impossible Mission is a let down - The "TV. series Part I" as they dub it, is less of an album and more of a variety show - for a start one will immediately notice that this is 'creatively conspired by De La Soul' - (wat da?) rather than produced by, and while some tracks are, indeed 'produced by' Supa Dave West they boast that like we should be grateful! We are - at least in songs like Respect and Voodoo Circus - but most of the rest smacks of laziness! And to name a few examples there's their own take on Common's, The Corner (interesting); Another 'retake' of 'If it wasn't For you' (previously heard on Handsome Boy Modelling School's, White People; And a triplet of discarded efforts from previous albums entitled 'Wat Da..!' 1, 2 and 3 - rightly so. The verdict: We want Quality not quantity - not a below par attempt at show-casing 'new' material.

Excellent addition to the De La Saga! 25 Jan. 2007
By Matthew Wooldridge - Published on

I had no idea this was released until I trolled through Amazon as I often do, just CHECKING to see if any of my favourite artists have released anything I missed. I was curious purchasing this, not really knowing what to expect, but I'm very glad I have this. There's no De La Soul fan that can be without IMPOSSIBLE: MISSION.

The album is a change of pace to what has come before, it almost plays like an anniversary album (which it might be, maybe from when the three Plug's got together?). It's like an episode of Seinfeld or The Simpsons where the characters sit back and re-run old moments from previous episodes. Except here, these moments are more like Deleted Scenes off a DVD. There's unheard tracks here from DE LA SOUL IS DEAD and BUHLOONE MIND STATE (my favourite De La album), and they're well worth the listen. Predominantly, though, there's plenty of new tracks to savour, and they have a raw, stripped sound to them in comparison to the heavily produced tunes in THE GRIND DATE.

My absolute favourite track from this CD is 'Live @ The Dugout '87, that fuses Lalo Schifrin's "The Job" theme from Mission: Impossible. I haven't been this pleased since De La sampled Yes' TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS for THE GRIND DATE.

Aside from all of this, it's great hip-hop. There's no way you'll be able to sit or stand still listening to this.

De La Does It . . . Again!! 15 Nov. 2007

Heads of real hip-hop understand how hard it is to stay at the top of the game. Well, these cats from the LI have been on top of things since "Plug Tunin'." reinventing themselves with each new release. This mixtape is no exception. Immediate standouts are "Live at the Dugout '87" (track is ill) "Respect" and "Freedom Train"; though the whole CD is bangin'. Even the previously unreleased tracks kick your mentals back to that old De La Sound that still sounds good today. This group will go down in hip-hop history as classic. Can't wait for Pt. 2.

Finally, more de LA! 2 Nov. 2006

I loved the Grind Date - thought it was a great counterbalance to the AOI stuff - Impossible Mission is the most progressive and creative De La release to date- Some straight up shout-outs to their legacy in the form of a few un-released tracks from the Buhloone Mind and De La is Dead days. Somehow it works, and glues the tracks together. The rest is pure progress - amazing beats and classic mindful De La lyrics - the beats have a nice balance between old school references, and contemporary/progressive unmatched by anything I've heard so far. Thanks De la
It's AWESOME and it's only a mixtape! 13 Sept. 2007

One of the best Hip-Hop albums to come out in '06. De La remains one of rap's MOST consistent, even with the stuff that didn't make some of their previous albums. A MUST have for any De La fan.

I want more 23 Feb. 2007
By music fan - Published on

It should be noted that this is a mixtape released to drum up interest in de la's next album. As such, I expect less of this release than a full length album. That said, this is a nice release. There's a good amount of older unreleased stuff, including "Just Havin' a Ball" (similar instrumental track can be heard on A Tribe Called Quest's first album and the Gravediggaz first album), and "Relax" (produced by the late J Dilla). Most of the newer stuff is good too. I especially like "You Got It". The different comments add alot of personality and comedy relief, making this a fun listen.

If this shows any indication of what their next album will be like, it should be their best in a while.
