Book Description

"The DaVinci Code meets Steampunk, with Dune flavor crystals"

The Impossible Lover is a provocative mystical journey of self-discovery and peculiar devices. It is the first of the forthcoming 6-part GrailChase Chronicles.

In this fast-paced adventure of the mind and heart, our unlikely protagonist, Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Jordan Haldane, (a roguish Victorian imperialist tool), is forced to confront two powerful dark brotherhoods when he inadvertently interrupts their nefarious schemes for world domination. He must face his personal demons and awakening to inner potential to protect his beloved Sophia and the ancient forbidden secrets hidden deep within the venerable fortress of Villa D'Amici.

Haldane finds himself thrust upon a dangerous quest to unravel the enigma surrounding the Illuminati and the Holy Grail, as Sophia explores the mysteries and responsibilities of love. This wide-sweeping alternative history grapples with perennial questions of the true nature of reality and consciousness, woven in with an exploration of the impacts of technology, memes, archetypes, sexual identity and philosophy in a society caught in the midst of rapid transformation.

This genre-bending novel blends elements of Steampunk, Action-Adventure, Romance, Satire, Conspiracy Theory, Metaphysics, Social-Political Philosophy and Ethics into a unique and compelling melange, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers on the edge of their seats throughout.

With well-defined and intriguing characters in a highly imaginative plot, The Impossible Lover engages not only those interested in Science Fiction, but appeals to Thriller and Romance fans, as well. Lovers of Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code, Frank Herbert's Dune and Neil Gaiman's Stardust will find much to captivate them in this sassy, intelligent and unpredictable tale.

A sexy, existential romp through archetypes, conspiracy theories and alternate realities.

The Impossible Lover is Book I of the GrailChase Chronicles, the mind-boggling series of subjective reality and strange technology. Written by Dara Fogel, philosopher and best-selling author of Before the Chase: A Short Anthology, the GrailChase Chronicles challenges traditional beliefs and definitions of reality.

"Next time you're ready to nestle into your reading chair and have a good time, this book should be your choice. This book has the Illuminati and the Holy Grail, mystical mysteries and historical figures, two lovers on the run and the fate of all of Europe at stake. If you enjoy the sort of historical revisionism found in The Da Vinci Code, I don't see how you could not love this. Tons of fun!" - William Bernhardt, NY Times Bestselling Author of the Ben Kinkaid Series

1.0 out of 5 stars The Impossible Book 1 April 2014

The book is quite, quite bad! I quit after reading less than 20%, so I might have missed any late redeeming value, but I seriously doubt it. Up to the point I decided to quit the plot was at a sixth grade level and the personae cut and pasted from the cheapest pulp romance. Don't expect anything exciting from the sex scenes, either. In addition to the shoddy quality, the text is full of inaccuracies and outright fallacies. The author doesn't know the differences among a pistol, a revolver and a Derringer. Romanesque architecture fluorishes during the Renaissance and boasts of tall towers and flying buttresses (how quaint!). Aldo sips sweet espresso in Milan in 1872, full twelve years before a patent for the first espresso machine was granted to Angelo Moriondo of Turin (no. 33/256 dated 16 May 1884). And these are but few pearls collected at random. Avoid!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy historical fantasy full of politics and intrigue 4 Dec. 2013
By Alex Prosper - Published on

The Impossible Lover is sexy, tense, curious and definitely unique. I loved the perfect escape it offered and I was completely swept up into the mystique and intrigue all the plot twists offered. Fogel's writing is a perfect blend of historical drama and glamour without being distracting, and the setting was fabulous as were the courtship and political machinations. Add in futuristic devices and communiques and you've got a rich tapestry of a novel. The Illuminati plus a hot romantic triangle is a lot to manage, and Fogel pulled it off with engaging, pageturning storytelling.

The guiding strength of the book is the character of Sophia. You have to admire a lady who has her corset cinched an extra inch and who approaches a courtship as if its a battleground--even if she has to take some bad turns in order to finally get it right. Fogel's wordsmithing created great dialogue for Sophia, and I loved any dialogue spit by Aldo, too. She masterfully handles inner dialogue as well, which is not an easy feat, but makes reading scenes a joy--like the one where Sophia meets Haldane and tries to manage her immediate and complicated attraction and sense of deja vu.

In all, great writing, outstanding storytelling and a great escape I highly recommend.

in this George Lucas meets J.K. Rowling style book you will find adventure and wonder. I could not put it down. It reminded me of many of the best books I can remember reading all rolled up into one, but remaining fresh and original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fogel creates an entirely new genre all her own! 15 Aug. 2014

Dara Fogel’s “The Impossible Lover: Book 1 of the Grail Chase Chronicles” is a genre busting, seamless combination of concepts and ideas. Romance, Biblical Mystery, Intrigue, Murder and even Steampunk; it has it all, plus more.
Such an intricate plot, while well thought out, often leaves readers befuddled and lost. No so with Dara Fogel. She grasps the threads of her story tightly and deftly weaves them into a tale that will keep you up long past your bedtime. Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Jordan Haldane, a well-known rouge and ladies’ man, meets Marquessa Sophia Dominica Maria D’Amici when he ventures to Italy to broker a deal. So begins a convoluted love story that is at times sweet and at times heart breaking. Surrounding this pair a war rages. Two branches of the Dark Brotherhood square off against the Guardians of the Grail – to the winner goes an ancient castle imbued with secrets too deep to ever be exposed.
I fell in love with Sophia and the way she thinks. In 1872 this lady is the epitome of class and feminism. She may wear her heart on her sleeve, but she has a way of thinking and talking that draws you in. Her dreams intrigue, and when the final scene plays out, your heart will break with hers…. And leave you anxious for Book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Intricate steampunk adventure 23 Aug. 2014
By Sam G - Published on
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Impossible Lover is Book 1 of the GrailChase Chronicles is an intricate adventure that does steampunk justice. Old World Europe is taken by storm with a little alternate history and a lot of steamy, compelling love.

Though this is a romance and Christopher and Sophia certainly take center stage (and the sex scenes are as engaging as they come), the cast is rich and well-rounded with dynamic, deep characters all around. The societies and figures involved make this an occasionally erudite, always wit-tinged political journey as well.

Fogel is a writer with a masterful way with words, and it's earned her at least one reader for this novel's sequel. I can't wait to inhabit more of the fabulous world.
