Product Description

Erdogan Denizli cleans up the messes other people make of their lives. Not their dirty houses or their dirty clothes - no, Erdogan gets a call when a bathroom is sprayed with arterial blood after a shamed pervert cuts his own throat, after a home-invasion-gone-wrong leaves bits of brain ground into the carpet, or when an undiscovered death drips putrefying body fluids into the apartment below. He's a crime scene cleaner in Ventura County, California and after forensics have done their job, he gets to work...

It's not his job to feel the pain of those left behind, or to feel sadness at a wasted and unmourned life, but he does. He can't help it. But he doesn't get involved; he can't afford to - he can't risk dredging up the shadows of his own past. But when, on a routine crime scene clean-up, he finds a piece of overlooked evidence, evidence that implicates the cops in an assassins-for-hire conspiracy, he can't look the other way, because now his own life's in danger. But who do you turn to for help when it's the cops that want you dead?

Implicated is a contemporary but noirish thriller with a "cast of characters straight out of an Elmore Leonard novel": Valerie, the femme fatale who wants to nail the cops who killed her husband... Maxim, the Azerbaijani mobster who wants in on a little bit of the American Dream ... ill-fated Sammy the Schmuck with his penchant for other people's lives (and other people's money). And Brad and Mikey, the cops who've long since thrown "Serve and Protect" out the window.

A great read... 13 Jan 2012
By Stealer
Format:Kindle Edition
I love crime thrillers and IMPLICATED by Peter Michael Rosenberg is as good - if not better - than most I've read this past year. What really makes this book stand-out from the crowd is the character of the crime-scene cleaner, Erdogan, a true outsider, not just because he's a stranger in a strange land (a Turkish Cypriot living in Southern California) but also because of his gruesome job. So when Erdogan discovers evidence during a clean-up that local Police might be involved in a murder conspiracy, he's pretty much on his own. And when the cops come gunning for him, his only option is to seek help from Valerie, a woman whose husband also died in suspicious circumstances. Rosenberg ratchets up the pace scene by scene right through to the brilliant (and unexpected) climax, and the final image will haunt you forever. Read it.

Although there were a lot of seemingly familiar elements in this story - the crooked cops, the hard-bitten forensics expert, the innocent hero who gets caught up in something big - there was something really fresh about "Implicated" which made it a cut above the average crime thriller. The loner crime-scene cleaner Erdogan is both an unusual and intriguing lead character, and the fact that, at times, he seems like the only decent and moral human being in the whole of Ventura County, makes him hugely sympathetic. There are some truly tense and terrifying moments as one would expect, but also the occasional funny scene to leaven the mix, and the ending (without giving anything away) is both exciting and genuinely moving. Recommended.

At last! 13 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I purchased Implicated in the US; but wanted to bring this book to the attention of a British audience too. After all, he is one of your own:

I've been following Peter Michael Rosenberg's career since his first novel "Kissing Through A Pane Of Glass" won a literary prize in the UK and got good reviews in the national press over there. I'm always on the lookout for literary fiction from lesser known (but talented writers) - gives me something to talk about in book club and in my own corner of small-town Montana I've become a bit of an acknowledged expert on "who to read next". So for the last fifteen years I've been wishing he'd write another book (his last came out in the UK in 1996) - so when I discovered this on my daily trawl through the latest indie fiction, my heart leapt.

Unlike his previous novels, this is genre fiction, a crime-fiction thriller, but "airport novel" or pulp it most certainly isn't. It just goes to show that you can have the best of both worlds, a smartly-paced and exciting story that is also well-written and thoughtful and gives us an insight into that most intriguing of animals, the human condition.
