5.0 out of 5 stars The best 27 Oct 2011

Format:Hardcover
This book is the best. I bought
CCNP ROUTE 642-902 Official Certification Guide (CCNP Route Exam Preparation)
Wendell Odom

And

CCNP SWITCH 642-813 Official Certification Guide (CCNP Switch Exam Preparation)
David Hucaby

But returned them for this book as they were too confusing.
I would highly recommend this as its well written. You wont be dissapointed.

Considering this is an electronic version, surely the publisher could more easily incorporate the errata errors they publish on their web site.

4.0 out of 5 stars a hard read 12 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's a hard read because so much information is included. It's very thorough and I wonder how much information is added as extra info not required for an exam. Saying that it leaves little unturned, and I would recommend it for anyone that expects a subject matter book to be complete.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waisted paper 23 Nov 2012
By Stefan
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book because it should be the official documentation used on Cisco Netacad CCNP V6.0 courses.
The book is full of errors, bad information and information presented is incomplete .
From place to place you find pieces of information just slightly related with the subject,
and big issues are treated superficial.
I am not a native English speaker, and I find difficult to follow this book because it lacks the technical logic.
There is a lot of references to basic CCNA knowledge /skill but there are too many (nice thing), that you lose track of the main subject.
There is no electronic format / no labs / no sim-exam engine.
If you are enrolled to a CCNP course at Netacad , you can fill the lack of labs with Cisco's labs, but some are pathetic.
My recommendation - buy Odom's book CCNP Official Certification Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect study guide for CCNP Route course 7 Aug 2010
By Alexander - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Five reasons to buy this book:
1. This book is well writen, so easy reading.
2. Every topic is fully covered and can be easily understand.
3. Every sample is described in detail with highlighting all significant lines in commands output.
4. All parameters of each command are explained many times (so you don't have to search the book for the first entry).
5. 45$ for 900+ pages (and nearly 100 pages of online available appendixes) is a great bargain.

P.S. From time to time (often in chapter 7) you'll find the prase "... is beyond the scope of this book". Some can consider this as a drawback, others - as an invitation to learn more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay book -- some wrong info 7 Feb 2012
By Tdistlist - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Picked up this book helping my coworker study for his CCNP. I already have mine, and it seems about a year ago they updated the tests.

I'm still shocked that Cisco Press is still publishing the same wrong EIGRP SIA example in multiple books.

In Teare's example "EIGRP Query Range", Figure 2-44, she proceeds to provide an example that would cause an SIA event (ignoring SIA-query and SIA-reply packets). Regardless of this oversight, she explains how the neighboring between A and B would fail because:

"Router B learns from these queries that none of the remote routers has a path to network 10.1.8.0/24, but it cannot respond that it does not know of a path, because Router B is waiting for Router A to reply to a query. Router A is waiting for either Router C, D, or E to reply to its query, and these remote sites are waiting for Router B to reply to their queries. Because Router B sent out the first query, its SIA timer expires first, and Router B reaches the SIA state for network 10.1.8.0/24 first (in 3 minutes by default). Router B resets its neighbor relationship with Router A."

This is incorrect information. Router B can and will respond to Router C,D,E because the assumption that B cannot reply because its current route is active is incorrect -- it will reply, and it will reply with an infinity/unreachable metric. Then C/D/E will reply to A, and the network will reconverge -- no SIA event.

I highly recommend this link for those looking to get a better grasp of EIGRP:

Cisco Document ID: 16406

If a router is in active state for a destination and subsequently receives yet another query (not from its previous successor), it immediately responds with its current metric that was set in the moment of transition to the active state (note that this metric must be higher than what it was when the router was passive because a transition into the active state is always a result of distance increase).

5.0 out of 5 stars Delivers What It Promised 19 Oct 2012
By android - Published on Amazon.com

After taking the test, I can say it covered the relevant topics. Clear writing coupled with examples made it easy to grasp the concepts. It didn't assume a certain level of knowledge so no matter how much you have forgotten, this book will get you up to speed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Prep for 642-902 ROUTE test 21 Dec 2012
By Jim in Baltimore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I just took and passed the 642-902 ROUTE test. I used this book exclusively to prepare.
I took the time and effort to methodically work through every chapter and every example. Using dynagen/dynamips (the free GNS router simulator) I simulated as many of the examples as possible. I am certain that kind of preparation helped get me through the test. But, from what I saw of the questions on the test, all the material needed to answer the questions is contained within this book. I have had the misfortune in the past to study from a book that did not adequately cover the material that was on the test. This book did.
I have held a CCNP for almost 9 years having first obtained it in 2004. I work for a Consulting company that is a Cisco partner and work with much of this technology on a continual basis. However, there are some technologies that I rarely if ever use. For instance, I have never done anything with IPv6. Much of what I learned came from this book which I found to be an excellent primer for IPv6. And every IPv6 question I saw in the test could be answered by know the material in this text.
I've read a complaints that the chapters are too long. The chapter on IPv6 was 200 pages. My response is "So what". That is way we have bookmarks to keep track of where we are in a book.
I read the comment about the SIA mistake in the book. I have not gone back to look at that example to validate the error. Probably a valid assessment by the other reviewer. But that is hardly enough of a reason to shy away from this book.
If you buy this book and put in the time, you should be able to pass the 642-902 ROUTE test.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! 26 Dec 2011
By Jace - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
As a CCNA, I have read several books ranging from "Network Fundamentals", "Routing Protocols and Concepts", "LAN Switching and Wireless", to "Accessing the WAN". After I read this book it its entirety, studied other materials, and practiced with hands on lab by using GNS3 and my home lab, I passed the CCNP ROUTE exam.

This book was perfectly detailed. It didn't go to in-depth, but always provided enough examples and explanations for me to walk away with a new concept and feel confident. I also took the Cisco Netacad course that corresponded to this book, and the book went perfect with the class!

Out of all of the Cisco books I have read and studied, I am excited to say that this is a great example of how a Cisco book should be written! All of the simple explanations, configuration examples, and introductions to new topics kept the book interesting and never felt stale.

Definitely worth 5 stars! Wish she authored the SWITCH book!
