This is a very readable book and certainly R F Delderfield lives up to the good reviews shown above. Bearing in mind this book was first published in 1968 one might expect a slightly dated feel, but this isn't the case at all. The book covers a quite short period of Napoleonic history - the aftermath of the retreat from Moscow and his eventual downfall - and whilst it is detailed you don't get bogged down with the minutiae. Neither is it just a history of Napoleon, Marshals and Kings; there is a good balance of how the lesser mortals in the Grande Armee faired. A delight to read and makes me keen to sample this author's other works.

Superb read. One of the best researched and multi faceted accounts of the worlds greatest soldier. The narrative spans the retreat from Moscow until abdication and exile to Elba, would like to read more in the same manner regarding the one hundred days and st Helena. Strongly recommended.

Excellent writing, enlightening analysis 15 July 2001

This is a wonderful book and should certainly have a place on anyone's Napoleonic bookshelf. It is almost certainly the best account available of the events of 1813-1814. Military and political events are properly balanced, with neither receiving too much or too little attention. The author is also able to draw about the characters themselves, especially Napoleon himself. Marshal Ney and Marshal Marmont receive their fair share, and the only real complaint I would have is that the author needlessly repeats the fact that Marshal MacDonald was the son of a Scottish clansman about a dozen times.
Excellent Book!!!! 7 Jan. 2015

This is a fascinating historical narrative, written in prose that seems like reading a novel. The author recounts Napoleons fall from his retreat from Russia to his first exile. Along the way are extraordinary battles, huge campaigns, interesting strategies, personal stories, lost opportunities, tricky politics and,of course, monumental personalities. All of which are described in easy to digest style, with just the right amount of detail. This book is a must for any reader who is interested in this historical period as well as someone who wants to learn more about this amazing time. I loved it!!!!!!
The only complaint I have is that the book would have been greatly enhanced by the inclusion of simple maps which would have greatly enhanced my ability to follow events much better over unfamiliar geography.

Very interesting read. Extremely well researched and presented. At times the detail the author includes, especially the geographic detail, makes it a little difficult to follow. Maybe the traditional book has more maps and illustrations, which would have been very helpful in following along.
