Imperial Spy,

This review is from: Imperial Spy (Imperial Trilogy) (Paperback)
I read this book with my son who is 9 and a fairly reluctant reader. It was fun, exciting very readable and absolutely gripping. I've subsequently been buying it for all his friends as birthday presents.
It has the same unputdownable quality as the Alex Rider books although the vocabulary is more difficult. We both really enjoyed it and are about to start the sequel.

Mark Robson, man of many talents...,

This review is from: Imperial Spy (Imperial Trilogy) (Paperback)
Brilliant Book. Met the man himself, a fascinating guy, signed my copy for me!
Highly recommended easy-to-read fantasy / adventure style. Aimed at children, but I'm 19 at university and I loved it! Doesn't give the plot away in the first 20 pages which is nice, features a female lead which works brilliantly. Something a bit different from what you might expect from this type of read, makes a nice change! I am looking forward to his second in this series, which I just bought today!

Not bad...,

Although this is far from the greatest book in the world I did enjoy it. There are plenty of problems with it (poor characterisation, particuarly early on, it's packed full of cliches, fomrulaic plot), yet it does have a certain appeal if you're looking for a McFantasy novel that you don't have to think about to much.
In many ways Robson doesn't bring much to the fantasy genre here. It's all very familair (apart from the odd absence of magic that is mentioned but never really used???). However, one of the interesting things he does it to mix the fantasy conventions with those of a spy novel and at times this does produce interesting results. I'm undecided if I will read the next one in the series...but I probably will!
