I ordered the masala dabba as a gift for "the friend who has everything". To be honest I wasn't expecting too much from the product as the image is quite small. How wrong I was! The masala dabba is THE ultra cool accessory to any kitchen. Very solid construction, comprising of a copper tin with six individual interior spice containers and airtight lid. The open containers are a great advantage if you cook with spices on a regular basis as they become freely accessible, making it easier to measure out quantities like teaspoons which do not normally fit down the neck of a spice jar! Another advantage is that I am now buy my spices from the local deli in plastic bags which are remarkably cheaper than the stuff in naff jars from the supermarket. I LOVE this tin, it just feels so authentic and looks great in any kitchen.
I can see some potential problems though. Firstly you have to know your cayenne pepper from your paprika as there are no labels. Also, if you were to accidentally drop the tin then the spices would be cross contaminated, creating the ultimate "garam masala" as the containers are not sealed.
The masala dabba will look great in you kitchen, it will keep your spices fresh AND it does look great, however, if you are new to cooking with spices or are at all clumsy in the kitchen, then this is probably to be avoided
