Review

"Vladimir Brnardic's "Imperial Armies of the Thirty Years' War (1): Infantry and Artillery" provides a fine survey of the history of the Hapsburg armies of the Thirty Years' War, exploring their role and actions in Europe's last major religious war. A fine survey, this is a pick for any in-depth military history library." -"The Bookwatch" (January 2010)
"In his book on this conflict, Author Vladimir Brnardic concentrates on the men and equipment of the Infantry and the Artillery units. As with all Men-At-Arms titles, this one provides a background to the war, has a look at how the war progressed through the various conflicts, then takes a closer look at the various units in how they were recruited, how they were dressed and the equipment they used. It also examines how these forces performed in battle and the tactics that were used. This is all superbly enhanced by artifacts, period illustrations and the art work of illustrator Darko Pavlovic. This was a very colorful time and t

Product Description

This history of the Catholic armies of the Hapsburg Empire that fought in the Thirty Years War explores the role of infantry and artillery during the last major religious war in mainland Europe. As the states of the Holy Roman Empire fractured along religious lines, all of Europe was plunged into a bloody conflict that lasted three decades, decimated populations, and annihilated communities. However, amidst this social, political, and religious catastrophe, important changes were experienced within the organization of armed forces. The war saw the end of the large mercenary forces and the beginnings of the well-disciplined national army. This book charts this progression, illustrating and explaining the forces of the key Catholic armies, while exploring the weapons, organization, tactics, and colorful uniforms used by the infantry and artillery.

Thirty Years War 21 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
Long awaited but a little disappointing. Too much space taken up narrating the various phases of the war.
Information welcome, however, on a neglected area in military history.

Bien pero sin pasarse 24 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
Tampoco mata. Está bien, para ampliar. El fundamento sigue siendo el de los tercios españoles. Sin embargo, no parece que lo tengan mucho en cuenta.

Some useful information, but a disorganized work... 1 Dec 2009
By Condottiere - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The "list of literature" in the back isn't meant to be a bibliography, but simply a few suggested books under the title "Further Reading." I'd have preferred a "Select Bibliography" like in Richard Brzezinski's "The Army of Gustavus Adolphus," but this is an exception in Osprey titles.

The author has shown that he's made some use of up to date material, and I would've liked to see more, especially formations and tactics with diagrams, but it's understandable, given the space limitations in an Osprey Men-at-Arms title. An example would be tercios having more files than ranks and not plodding formations; also infantry divided on the battlefield into 1000 men tactical battalions, sometimes formed from several understrength regiments, instead of being created from a 2000-3000 strong regiment.

The layout of the work is disorganized: the author jumps back and forth in covering organization and tactics within the same paragraph. Words are used interchangeably, such as tercio and regiment and battle(battalion) and brigade.

Errors: Calivers were not lighter muskets, but standardized arquebuses. A sentence on Breitenfeld refers to four massive tercios in single line, when this wasn't the case.

Plenty of black and white photos - the norm for Ospreys, color pictures being the exception - of 17th Century gear from Swedish and Austrian museums and contemporary pictures, some from private collections - no 19th century recreations! Colorful plates with lively scenes, reminiscent of Angus McBride's work.

An 'Enlightening' Read for a Novice on this Subject. 31 Oct 2011

The war saw the end of the large mercenary forces and the beginnings of the well-disciplined national army.

This book charts this progression, illustrating and explaining the forces of the key Catholic armies, while exploring the weapons, organization, tactics, and colourful uniforms used by the infantry and artillery of the day.

I found the vibrant colour templates to be very enjoyable, as well as the descriptions of the military structure and organization. It does read easier if you already have an idea of the material in question, and I would recommend this book as a follow-up on the topic rather than going to it as an initial read, as it does run the risk of turning away its reader with its heavy use of unfamiliar terminology.

Still in all, a good book, and a welcomed addition to my Osprey collection.

I was looking forward, unfortunately to no avail... 19 Nov 2009
By Roman Urbani - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
nedoporucuji, zastaralé, velice povrchní informace. Podívejte na seznam literatury! Zádný pramen starsí nez 150 let.
Mixované informace ze zacatku a konce valky.

Not recommend!

obsolete very superficial information. Look at the list of literature! No source of more than 150 years.
Mixed information from the beginning and end of the war.
