It's only by looking back on Imperfectly, Ani DiFranco's third album that we're able to see how far she's come. It's also easy to see where she came from. At this point, DiFranco was still enough of a traditional folkie to stick a political sentiment like "She sits there like America / Suffering through slow reform" into a personal song that deals with abuse ("Fixing Her Hair"). Similarly, on many songs she sounds as though if she's already come to terms with her sexuality, then she hasn't yet come to terms with the way society deals with it. But she also demonstrates that she's figuring out how to use her voice, charisma, affected delivery, and the chance to play around in the studio on the a cappellas "Every State Line" and "Coming Up." There's also the tender, impassioned tracks ("The Waiting Song," "Served Faithfully"), which DiFranco's never had a short supply of--and never been less than moving on. --Randy Silver

Ani Difranco:More than just Folk More than you can believe 20 Dec 2000

Ani Difranco is revolutionary. Writing songs from the early age of 9, Independence is not a new game to her. Neither is her music, which draws upon personal experiences and delves into the maturity of controversial issues most artist are unable to express succesfully(sexuality,aids,politics). Surfacing from her own record company "Righteous Babe Records" Ani Difranco's lyrics reaches out to just about everyone. She strums her guitar in accordance to the emotions that she feels. Ani Difranco is one hell of a storyteller and what's more appealing is that she is unconcerned with uneccesary media hype. Imperfectly is yet another abum of experience, of original thought and of unmatched charm and beauty. What makes Ani different from the rest? She's human.

This is one of my favourite Ani Difranco albums. It's a passionate highly charged collection of songs. I think it's her most "alive" sounding album - it's bursting with energy.

Ani Difranco is one of the 20th centuries greatest artists. A micture between folk and rock and it works incredibly well. My favourite tracks being every state line and fixing her hair. Well worth listening to once in a while.
