some praise from satisfied thriller readers...

Knightmare said... I read this book practically in one sitting and then went
straight on to read the sequel. It's a fast-paced story with a
terrifying villain and a great heroine. I love books with strong female
characters and Lorne Simpkins is one of the best I've come across - no
matter what's thrown at her, she keeps on fighting. The book has the
feel of an English version of 24 with a female Jack Bauer.

said...Was not sure what I expected but loved this book it was fast
paced from page one and did not let up, in fact i only downloaded it
yesterday lunchtime and could not put it down I stayed up till 12.30
this morning to finish it, the characters were excellent even the bad
guy was portrayed in such a way as to send shivers down the spine.
Cannot wait for the sequel to see what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hold on tight. 7 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Right from the onset of this review, I have to confess that I didn't realise that this was the second book in the Lorne Simkins series (I'm reticent to call it a trilogy as the author refers to them as books one, two and three.). I'm normally careful not to read books out of order, but I have to admit, it didn't make any difference, as the book stands well alone.

This book really does grab the reader by the scruff of the neck and hurls them through the plot. Don't expect to take time to draw breath either, as you get drawn into the hero's world as she fights, ever more desperately, against a sadistic (and boy, do I mean sadistic) serial killer, intent upon her destruction.

The book doesn't let up throughout, hurling the reader from scene to scene as the detective relentlessly hunts her quarry through London and the South East.

The author writes with a smooth and powerful imagination enticing the reader to try and guess what will happen next. Cleverly, although the twists and turns are severe, they never feel contrived or outrageous; a hard thing to achieve, with a book as exciting as this one.

I'm happy to say that there were very few typographical errors in this book, a couple of homophonic ones, but overall very well edited.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK read 19 Feb 2013
By Carole
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this on the strength of Book 1 which I gave 5*s. Book 2 is only worthy of 3*s. It was seriously lacking in believability. The story was so far fetched I almost gave up reading it. I carried on hoping it might get better but it didnt. I will try Book 3 mainly because I like the main character Lorne. If the author has given her more stupid plots I wont be buying Book 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced, gripping thriller 21 Aug 2012
By Beeshon
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the second of the novels featuring DI Lorne Simpkins. Cruel Justice was the excellent start of the series and Impeding Justice is even more thrilling and gripping. I absolutely loved it.

Lorne is still the feisty, stubborn, no-nonsense detective hunting down sadistic killers, still with a rocky marriage (being married to her husband and her job just isn't easy) and still with a teenager who is being, well, a teenager. To make matters worse, a tragedy hits her close-knit work team and her eight-year-long chase of her nemesis, The Unicorn, steps up a pace. He has started to make it personal--very, very personal.

Mel is an excellent thriller writer. She packs action and tension into a package with strong characters along with heinous villains. Lorne's domestic life and problems therein remind us that she isn't superwoman, but a keen and brave working wife and mother, with the police force in her blood, doing her best to make the streets a safer place.

This isn't a book you can put down easily and Mel manages to leave you emotionally exhausted: appalled by man's ability to be utterly depraved and violent, touched by the resistance and strength of innocent youth, totally wrung-out by the pain a mother feels for the suffering of her child. Not only that, Mel deftly leaves you hungering for more with an almighty cliffhanger.

On to the next (Final Justice), Beeshon, quick as you can...

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great action novel 4 Feb 2012
By Mole TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lorne is a police officer trying to hunt down a truly evil man, involved in human trafficking, drugs, weapons, terrorism. No matter what the police do, he always seems to be one step ahead of them; and then he kidnaps her daughter and uses the young girl as leverage to torment and humilate Lorne, whilst continuing with his criminal plans.

I found this to be a great story; although I felt that it seemed to take some of the plot from the film "Taken". It has a really great pace to it, and I felt that the story was quite believable throughout. I have seen first hand some of the less pleasant aspects involved in the modern trade in human life, and it can be far worse than is portrayed within this book.

There a few issues with the formatting of the text in the version that I downloaded for my Kindle; words running together, some bad paragaraph separation etc. but this did not detract too much from the book. Of course, this is part of a series; I haven't seen the others, but will probably try to track them down.

A little bit too adult for younger teenagers, but a good read overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars edge of the seat stuff 22 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I have now read all 4 of the books in this series, and while they are all worthy of 5 stars, this was my favourite.
The Unicorn, don't think we ever found out why he's called that, has to be one of the most vicious, nasty killers I've ever come across. Even so I was gobsmacked at how low he could go. He really showed the depths of his depravity in the way he torments Lorne. I don't want to give anything away here but how she kept focussed with all that was happening around her I do not know. A really excellent book all round.
