Book Description

15 Aug 2013
The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant is a complete guide to getting pregnant-the medical, psychological, social, and sexual aspects, told in a straight-forward, funny, and compassionate manner, like talking to a good friend who's been through it all. Jean Twenge covers everything you'll be wondering about and advises what you can do at home, before getting a doctor involved. Twenge explains how to prepare mentally and physically when thinking about having a child, how to talk about it with family, friends, and your partner, how to know when you're ovulating, and when best to have sex, how to tilt the odds toward having a boy or a girl, how to handle the great sadness of a miscarriage, and what to do when you do get pregnant. Trying to conceive often involves an enormous amount of emotion, from anxiety and utter disappointment to hope and joy. With comfort, humor, and straightforward advice, The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant is the bedside companion to help you through it.

Product Description

"Psychology professor Twenge (Generation Me) cuts to the chase in this wonderful (and often humorous) guide to getting pregnant and fast. The author explains that when she was trying to conceive, she read everything she could get her hands on and found that much of the commonly accepted information was false. She decided to set matters straight and help women get pregnant as quickly and effortlessly as possible. Twenge takes a active and confident approach from the get-go, assuring women that if they use her methods of fertility awareness, there s a good chance of getting pregnant on the first try. She offers three ways to determine the time of ovulation: charting, ovulation predictor kits, and fertility monitors, advising that the Very Impatient Woman use all three. Twenge details the vital importance of timing, citing research on the best days and hours to procreate as well as to synchronize ovulation with the chances for a boy or girl. This is a fine science, indeed, but Twenge explains her approach with clarity and precision. She debunks the myth that a relaxed attitude affects outcome and shoots down outdated statistics (e.g., oft- cited research about the fertility of women over 35 culled from birth records from France in the 1600s). Women hoping to conceive will swiftly find very helpful information in this manageable, informative, and entertaining guide." --"Publishers Weekly"

5.0 out of 5 stars Reassuring and practical 15 Aug 2012
This is a practical, common-sense and easy to read book. The author has suggestions e.g. around diet, which are much easier for a working woman to follow than those in many other books aimed at those trying to concieve. The data seems much more up to date too e.g. taking into account that these days ovulation prediction kits (OPK's) and charting can be used together to give a much better chance of getting pregnant than many often-quoted statistics suggest. The information on how to interpret OPK's & AHM test results was also especially useful as it was different to anything I've read elsewhere and made sense based on the evidence given. This book is very reassuring and has changed the way I go about trying to conceive.

2.0 out of 5 stars Read with caution 3 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
It has some good tips regarding nutrition and how to handle stress, however it is VERY american and a lot of advice doesn't apply to the NHS. Also, if you have been trying longer than 6 months you might find it upsetting/annoying as she seems to have taken no longer than 4 months of trying with each pregnancy before conceiving. This apparently means she can right with authority on how it feels to have difficulty conceiving.
Also, it's a bit muddled on the evidence front as she wavers between only recommending treatments if they have a good evidence base ie. have had proper clinical trials but then goes on to say things like...My friend's friend found this happened so such and such must be true?!!
All in all, wouldn't recommend, you are better off reading online information such NHS choices or [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars funny, packed with facts and non-judgy 13 Mar 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After 4years of TTC (with one successful outcome) I thought I knew quite a lot about the "natural" process of trying to conceive but so much more to learn in this book. Helped me face TTC again after miscarriage. Funny, no nonsense, factual and non judgemental. Is American but still very much relevant for UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feel so much better after reading this! 28 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought I new what I should be doing, but after a year trying clearly not! Only just finished reading the book but putting the recommendations into practice now. Based on her advice, we may have been getting a few things wrong including timing (relying on ovulation sticks too much when potentially it is too late by the time you get a positive)... Hardest thing for me is to give up the sugar cravings!
