Douglas Preston is an excellent writer, if you are into what I'd describe as the "action" genre. This is a fun book with an absorbing plot. I read it straight through and couldn't put it down. Strange topaz like jewels called honeys are being imported to the US and Wyman Ford is despatched to find out where they are coming from. At the same time, Abbey Straw and her friend Jackie are searching for a meteoroid which landed on an island near their homes on the coast. Obviously, I can't tell you what happens but I can tell you the book will take you past potential government conspiracies, strange discoveries, piracy and kidnapping.

Douglas Preston manages to write action thrillers without all the genre's old fashioned sexist claptrap. He generally has heroes of both genders and he treats them as equals. I really appreciate that!

Douglas Preston's novels, whether written alone or with his writing partner, Lincoln Child, are always good - Tyrannosaur Canyon, Blasphemy, The Codex. He's always worth reading.

I've never read a Douglas Preston novel before (or even a Preston/Child novel) but I find technothrillers about meteors and alien first contact hard to resist, especially when I need a break from books that make me think. Impact did everything that I wanted from it and I raced through it in well under two days. I found it almost impossible to put down and resented work more than ever.

A meteoroid crashes into an island off Maine at the same time as another hits a Khmer stronghold in Cambodia. While young Abbey Straw and her friend Jackie investigate one, US government agent Wyman Ford looks into the other. He discovers that the crater in Cambodia is not at all what he expected. The twist here is made me sit up with a jolt on the bus when I read it. Meanwhile, a scientist is fired from his job at Mars exploration agency because he is fascinated by the impossible emissions of Gamma rays that he has detected from the planet. Incidentally, his predecessor, who had been obsessed with the same thing, had been murdered.

The whole novel is a rollercoaster of adventure as Ford and Abbey are pursued by a hitman through high seas and from state to state. The novel is full of exciting set pieces, not least of which are the early scenes in Cambodia. Finally, the government takes notice and it is clear that if nothing is done it may be only days until earth is destroyed.

After this, it won't be long before I read another Preston novel.

"Impact" is a strong addition to the canon of work by pulp fiction author Douglas Preston. It's not great literature, but the book is an enjoyable, made-for-TV style techno thriller. The good guys wear the white hats, the bad guys are in black. The hero is chiseled of jaw and has the book smarts as well as the skill to handle himself in a crisis. The plot skates along at a fast pace, the science is accessible and the twists surprising. I'd recommend this for a long journey or the beach

Not much impact
I was rather looking forward to this novel as I hadn't read a Preston book for quite a time. Maybe I've moved on but I didn't find this book to be particularly gripping. Read more
