Unhelpful for step 1 25 Sep 2011
By G. Aldridge - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love the ridiculously simple line of textbooks. Micro and pathophyz are both worth every penny, and I've liked some of the others as well (their step 1 book is not half bad).
This book, however, made me angry. I bought it for a quick review during my step 1 studying. I read through almost the entire book in one day, the whole time with a growing sense of unease that I was learning nothing useful and was wasting my time. When I looked at the immunology sections in first aid and did some questions, I was disappointed to see that many things I needed to have covered were lacking, and things I had learned were very low yield. At the end I wasn't really sure what the text had been about, but it didn't seem to be clinical immunology.
Furthermore, it wasn't funny. It seems like the authors of this line should make at least a half-hearted effort to be funny or amusing, or at least simple, or else write for a different line of textbooks.

I returned the book the next day. My advice is that relevant sections of first aid will probably be sufficient.

made ridiculously unclear 23 May 2011

The book is a jumble of terms with no logical introduction to concepts. On pp 4 it first mentions antigens. How basic is that? But it doesn't bother explaining what an antigen is until pp 10. Only your own knowledge of the subject matter will get you through this ridiculously UNCLEAR jumble of terminology that appears as though it was jut thrown at a wall to see if it would stick.
quick overview but not helpful for bords 9 Mar 2012

This book might be well suited to a high school or maybe college cell bio course with a unit on immunology, or a quick overview to get your bearings when starting a medical immunology course. But it is just the bare bones of the different cell types and immunological reactions and a couple of examples without any significant mechanistic or integrative insights. I really liked the Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple, but this one was a great disappointment in comparison. It is dry, has few mnemonics or tricks for memory, it is a terrible combination of painfully boring and not much useful content. The more complicated (i.e. board relevant) info( like cytokines, complement, pathways that involve multiple cell types, etc.) is barely mentioned and/or inserted in table form with no useful way to remember or integrate it. It was a decent refresher of the most basic principles which I guess was a good place to start for me since I bombed immunology initially and am having to start at square one for board studying, but I feel my time would have been better spent just going straight to First Aid General Principles or other clinically thorough but brief/basic text, which is necessary after this in any case. Starting with this book was not any value added, I'd have been just as well skipping the 6 hours or so I spent on it. The good thing is it was short and only $20 so I don't feel extraordinarily ripped off.
