3.0 out of 5 stars "Immortals" series book 6, 16 Nov 2008
By A Reader - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This series continues, despite the fact that the five immortal goddess-born warriors have found happiness in the arms of their perfect matches and finally defeated the ancient demon who held one brother in torturous captivity for centuries. In "The Crossing" Manannan mac Lir (Mac), the son of a Celtic water god and the queen of Annwyn (aka Fairyland) takes a lead role, a creature of life magic tainted by death magic during the final battle in book 4.

The jaded Mac is a musician with a girlie fan base willing to throw themselves at his body should he snap his fingers in their direction (which he does). Travelling the globe Mac initially forgets his role as "Guardian of Celtic Magical Creatures in the Human World" until someone subtely attacks a faerie village and leaves an infant gravely ill after draining faerie life essence. Investigating the scene Mac comes across something impossible, the intricate and perfect balancing of life and death magic; however before he finds the culprit, the stolen life essence is restored and the faerie baby fully recovered.

Artemis Black is a witch, her lineage such a perfect balance of life and death creatures that she is able to competently wield both aspects of magic. Collecting life essence in payment for her son's hostaged soul, Artemis is desperate enough to take any action or negotiate any demon deal in the hopes of rescuing Zander's soul from the deepest part of Hell, even betraying the man she loves (several times).

There is plenty of action and the story line fast paced as Mac and Artemis unite to travel through the regions of Hell and certainly enough passionate encounters between the pair to satisfy any romance lover; however how many times can Artemis hurt and betray Mac before he says enough already? I'd say he has a touch of masochism about him to so doggedly follow and help Artemis considering her actions. Yes she's trying to rescue her son, but by severely doubting the power of a demi-god and his weakened life magic in a realm of dark magic Artemis again and again makes the wrong choice, sacrificing Mac in the hopes she is saving her son. At least the make-up sex is red hot!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy romance, 3 Nov 2008
By Helen Hancox "Auntie Helen" (Essex, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The five previous books in the Immortals series have focused on five immortal brothers. This sixth instalment takes one of the side characters from the previous stories and focuses on him. Manannán mac Lir is half god, half sidhe, and is pretty bored with his immortal life. That is, until he meets the improbably-named Artemis Black, a very unusual witch who has been stealing life essence from various magical villages.

Artemis is on a mission, one she can't reveal to Mac. But Mac just can't leave her alone, knowing that she's in trouble. As Mac and Artemis travel to the depths of the dark world they have to learn about trust, resourcefulness and immortality.

This book was rather patchy with some exciting parts and some dull parts. Mac is supposedly British but the dialogue was very awkward with him using English slang ('bloke', calling people 'love') but not always correctly. The 'love' part was completely overdone as well. Mac and Artemis continually escape from almost certain death which got rather repetitive and I didn't feel convinced by their romance. This book is probably one to miss.
