A perfect introduction to a gem of a band,
This review is from: The Immortal Story (Audio CD)
The Only Ones remain one of the sadly under-rated bands of all time. Peter Perrett is starting to be recognised as one of the all time great songwriters and there is much here to justify this claim. A heady mix of two classic albums this compilation serves to chronicle the angst and torch like beauty that characterised this band. Gorgeous melodies and power chorded climax guitars surrround a voice so rich that it makes Iggy Pop and Howard Devoto sound like Disneyesque mice. I urge you to try this band. You will not be sorry.Nods along the way to Dylan, The Beatles, Magazine, the Clash, you get the picture ...

Sadly, too many great tracks missing,
This review is from: The Immortal Story (Audio CD)
The Only Ones were truly a great UK post-punk band, though sadly I can't lavish similar praises on the compiler of 'The Immortal Story'. OK, so retrospective collections may not be easy to compile, and every anthology attracts its share of whingers who bemoan the exclusion of certain tracks, but it's beyond me how brilliant songs like 'Breaking Down', 'City of Fun' and 'Language Problem' didn't make the CD. Personally, I'd recommend people snatch up the self-titled first album and 'Even Serpents Shine'. It may work out more costly than buying this cheaper 'best of..' but you'll be getting a fuller and more pleasurable Only Ones experience...also, you really don't need some of the tracks at towards the end of this offering.
