DVD Description

Directed by influential comic book artist Enki Bilal, based on his own graphic novels, Immortal is one of the first films in the world to be shot almost entirely on green screen, along with Sin City and Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow. Immortal is a film of extraordinary vision and a treat for comic book and sci-fi fans alike and has never before been released in the UK.

In the year 2095, a giant extraterrestrial pyramid appears over New York. Inside, the ancient Egyptian god Horus is told he has just seven days on Earth before his destruction. Seven days to revisit the world he helped create, and mate with the beautiful blue haired woman Jill Bioscopin (Linda Hardy) in this maze of a city.

In order to seduce Jill, Horus must find a human body capable of hosting his own form. In his search for a body that can be possessed without being destroyed, Horus leaves a trail of death and bloodshed. He finally discovers Nikopol (Thomas Kretchmann, King Kong, The Pianist), a rebel leader who has been cryogenically frozen for 30 years. Together, Nikopol and Horus pursue Jill, whose strange powers are also being investigated by Doctor Elam Turner (Charlotte Rampling, Swimming Pool).

i'm a big fan of Enki Bilal's books, and this is a visually incredible adaptation of the material in Gods in Chaos... It outdoes Blade Runner and Fifth Element in its dystopian city futurescapes, and its storyline does not pander to neat Hollywood structures and endings. True, the CGI sections could have been slightly better, but there is a thematic distinction between the scenes which use real actors and those which do not. This is a multilayered story with a tragic mood that really appeals - Jill Bioskop, the beautiful heroine who cries blue tears and is cursed with special powers is a marvellous invention. The film merits several viewings both to appreciate the meaning and the design.

Immortal seems to evenly divide opinion. It may not be to all tastes, but it is a very watchable and enjoyable film, with a compelling message about the nature of humanity and what immortality actually is. The plot isn't exactly taxing but it is presented in a stylish and visually exciting format -- just not one which will necessarily appeal to those seeking straightfoward sci-fi or action/adventure thrills.

If you enjoyed movies like Run Lola Run, Celine et Julie, Bladerunner, Final Fantasy, the Matrix anime series, or the Fifth Element... well, this is some weird kind of hybrid of the lot of them. It's at the high end of comicbook (or 'graphic novel' if you must) art, brought to life with a few carefully chosen actors and then stylised (deliberately so) animation. The use of cgi allows the director to realise things which just ain't possible in real life -- the gods Bast, Horus and Anubis are particularly interesting.

But the result is a continental film, not a Hollywood one. So if you want blockbuster, then try elsewhere!

Highly imaginative 29 July 2007
Format:DVD
I really enjoyed this film. It's romatic sci-fi 1984 stuff with a bit of Egyptianj throwen in. Linda Hardy (Jill) and Thom Kretschmann (Nikopoll) are a great couple. She's really sexy and he's cool. This film is part of the graphic novels by Enki Bilal. It is highly imaginative film but has one flaw. The CGI is a bit game like. Because it blends live action and CGI it doesnt pull it off. Some of the scenes are realy plastic. But for all that, it's a really good watch.
