Format: Audio CD
The first five tracks do the title justice.
They comprise Christian in the company of fellow boppers Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk as well as swing-to-bop tenor man Don Byas at the legendary Minton's playhouse in Harlem in the summer of 1941.
'Swing To Bop' and 'Kerouac' are extended performances by musicians who would shortly completely change jazz, and arguably added the prefix 'modern'. Sadly, Christian was to die the following year, so was unable to reap the harvest of the seeds sown here.
The last five tracks are excellent be-bop played by Gillespie's band in 1945. Although they (obviously) do not include Christian, they are an interesting indication of what he anticipated. All of them are essential listening.
