Amazon.co.uk Review

Imaginary friends and security blankets are common childhood fixations that parents spend a lot of time worrying about, but how many parents become more obsessed with those imaginary worlds than their children? Evan Daniels, played by the ever-hysterical Eddie Murphy, is a part-time father, full-time financial executive who has little time for his daughter Olivia (Yara Shahidi) and even less time for her imaginary friends and security blanket. When Evan's absentminded attention to Olivia's far-fetched stories, combined with her ill-timed use of some important meeting notes as arts and crafts materials causes a huge blowup between father and daughter, it also reveals an uncanny window into the financial world. Suddenly, Evan becomes fixated on his daughter's imaginary playmates and will do anything, including singing and dancing in public, in exchange for the financial insight that yields him such great professional results.
While Olivia loves her new relationship with her father, her reliance on her imaginary friends deepens, causing her teachers and mother much concern, and she eventually begins to sense that her father may possibly care more for the information that he's receiving than for her. Meanwhile, Evan pits his unconventional reliance on what he dubs his "inner child" against his co-worker Whitefeather's (Thomas Haden Church) unorthodox reliance on Indian legends and the two men turn their financial firm upside down and end up competing for the coveted position of chairman of the board. In the end, Evan must make some tough choices about whether his job in the financial world is more important than his job as a father and Olivia will be forced to live with the consequences. The parenting dilemmas presented in this film are universal, and kids and parents alike will laugh uproariously at the crazy antics of Eddie Murphy and Yara Shahidi while simultaneously discovering that good parenting doesn't always look like one might expect. (Ages 6 and older with parental guidance due to mild language and brief questionable behaviour) --Tami Horiuchi

'Imagine THAT' is a fantasy comedy-drama movie, which upon its release received a mixed response from critics and shockingly flopped at the box-office.

'Imagine THAT' concentrates on the relationship between a busy father, Evan Danielson (Eddie Murphy) whose priority is his work, and his daughter, Olivia (Yara Shahidi) who has access to an imaginery world where she has imaginery friends. The movie shows how Evan who is a financial executive starts struggling at work and as a result seeks help from Olivia's imaginery friends, does it help, you need to watch it to find out.

The only minor flaw of the movie is the main story, which shows the father not having time for his daughter due to his work. This subject is not new and has been dealt with too many times before. This flaw however, is greatly compensated with a sweet all-round good movie.

The story is straight forward, which is perfect for the whole family including the kids to watch. The imaginery world theme will be a HIT with the kids. If I had watched the movie when I was a kid, it would've been so exciting. Saying that, I'm an adult and I was still excited.

I simply loved the chemistry between Murphy and Shahidi, their portrayal of the father and daghter relationship was simply touching.

Murphy is on-form after a long time, his comic timing is brilliant and his acting in general is top-notch. Shahidi is also a treat to watch and performs naturally with Murphy. Thomas Haden Church who plays Murphy's work rival in the movie is entertaining.

The direction provided by Karey Kirkpatrick is competent as he manages to extract fine performances from the cast and succeeds in making the movie touching and emotional.

The background musical score, which is provided by Mark Mancina fits well with the movie.

The movie is a feel-good feature, which undservedly flopped at the box-office.

'Imagine THAT' is essential veiwing for the whole family.

A gem discovery . 1 Jan 2011

I discovered this movie by accident while searching movies by Martin Sheen, however it is Eddie Murphy the main lead for the movie that delivers a performance that will pull at your heart strings as he struggled with self doubt about his professional ability, discovery of his daughter and thereby improving their relationship by playing with her imaginary friends.

What fascinated me most was the concept of imaginary friends. Do children see something or is it their imagination. In this movie if it was just the child's imagination how come she was getting the answers right about the companies and the questions on investment? From my experience I know that children due to their innocence and purity are still connected to the animistic world- i.e. - the world of fairies and gnomes and can commununicate with them and get information that seems outstanding to the adult mind. I think this was what this movie tried to show based on some native American Indian mythology about 'star blanket' through which one can communicate with the great spirits and this worked best through the innocence of children. This was subtly done in the movie and that made it believable. This is Eddie Murphy at his best with impeccable comic timing and a sensitivity that touches something deep within as he struggled to transform from a workaholic to a caring father. The ensemble cast especially Yara Shahidi(his daughter in the movie), Thomas Haden Church, Martin Sheen, amongst others did well to produce a hit of a movie, one that I had to watch twice in one sitting just to savour it all over again. It is hilarious, quirky and original.

The DVD is packed with special features, deleted scenes, hilarious outtakes, Star Blanket - native American influence, commentary with director Kerry Kirkpatrick and breakout star Yara Shahidi, Yara Shahidi set tour, a playground of the mind, getting the part, the king and his Jesters, what were they really saying? You can't go wrong with this.
