I discovered this movie by accident while searching movies by Martin Sheen, however it is Eddie Murphy the main lead for the movie that delivers a performance that will pull at your heart strings as he struggled with self doubt about his professional ability, discovery of his daughter and thereby improving their relationship by playing with her imaginary friends.
What fascinated me most was the concept of imaginary friends. Do children see something or is it their imagination. In this movie if it was just the child's imagination how come she was getting the answers right about the companies and the questions on investment? From my experience I know that children due to their innocence and purity are still connected to the animistic world- i.e. - the world of fairies and gnomes and can commununicate with them and get information that seems outstanding to the adult mind. I think this was what this movie tried to show based on some native American Indian mythology about 'star blanket' through which one can communicate with the great spirits and this worked best through the innocence of children. This was subtly done in the movie and that made it believable. This is Eddie Murphy at his best with impeccable comic timing and a sensitivity that touches something deep within as he struggled to transform from a workaholic to a caring father. The ensemble cast especially Yara Shahidi(his daughter in the movie), Thomas Haden Church, Martin Sheen, amongst others did well to produce a hit of a movie, one that I had to watch twice in one sitting just to savour it all over again. It is hilarious, quirky and original.
The DVD is packed with special features, deleted scenes, hilarious outtakes, Star Blanket - native American influence, commentary with director Kerry Kirkpatrick and breakout star Yara Shahidi, Yara Shahidi set tour, a playground of the mind, getting the part, the king and his Jesters, what were they really saying? You can't go wrong with this.
