Book Description

18 Oct 2012 Daily Telegraph

The essential humour gift book of the year returns in the anticipated fourth volume of this bestselling series – guaranteed to provoke laughter and amazement.

The first volume of unpublished letters to the Daily Telegraph, Am I Alone in Thinking…?, not only became a Christmas bestseller but also established the paper’s letter-writers as a uniquely waggish, eccentric and maverick institution. They can be relied upon, particularly in the letters slightly too pungent or off-the wall to print, to offer a new and memorable take on the great events of the day.

Now, with the fourth book in the series, Iain Hollingshead collects together our favourite letterwriters on everything from this summer’s Olympics to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, as well as the rather more obscure concerns voiced by ‘M’, the habitual correspondent who believes himself to be the head of MI5 but writes from an internet café in Bristol. Trenchant, choleric and hilariously funny, this will once again be the humour book of the year.

About the Author

Iain Hollinghsead spent two years on the Letters to the Editor desk before becoming a full-time feature writer for The Daily Telegraph. His more serious assignments have included reporting on the student riots in London and interviewing everyone from Michael Atherton to Gurkha veterans to a member of Seal Team Six, the elite unit which killed Osama bin Laden.
His less serious assignments have included taking a bath in Las Vegas with six albino rabbits, spending three days behind the scenes at the Miss England competition, camping outside Westminster Abbey for the Royal Wedding, eating in five Michelin starred restaurants in one day, learning to flirt in Pizza Express, learning to Dance in Mamma Mia!, performing stand-up comedy to 300 eight-year-olds, training with the Royal Marines, climbing into a Spitfire and experiencing a Brighton nudist beach first hand. He now writes freelance for the paper. He has edited four bestselling collections of unpublished letters from the Daily Telegraph for Aurum.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars again! 4 Dec 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the fourth book of unpublished letters to the Daily Telegraph and I've really enjoyed them all - therefore this is an edited version of my review of the second book in the series, as the format of the books is very similar.
There are some letters which are just humorous, some which lead up to a dreadful pun, and there are some that are so bigoted that it's difficult to believe that they have not been written in jest - but you fear they were not.
It's a very easy read, and at times laugh-out-loud funny. A great book for yourself or as a gift.
I think, in general, people who have read one or more of the others will be very pleased to read this new volume, indeed might even be looking forward to receiving this as a present.
There are possibly not quite as many laugh-out-loud moments compared with previous years - but still highly amusing...
...and so much more enjoyable than last year's corresponding volume from the Daily Mail (and that is because of content, not my views of the two news papers).

5.0 out of 5 stars Imagine my surprise 19 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
A real treat and a must every year. Should keep it for Christmas but my husband gets when it arrives as I know how he enjoys it, If I had any will power it would make a great 'stocking filler'.

A book to "dip into" if you want a good laugh. Small enough to put in handbag to read in dentist/doctor/hospital waiting rooms. Will make you laugh out loud, surprising how many letters you seem to agree with!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining 4 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a witty and amusing publication which on occasion has had us roaring with laughter at the rather wry way some of the letter writers view the world. Hilarious!

5.0 out of 5 stars little gem 8 Mar 2013

God bless the Telegraph readers; mad as snakes and sharp as tacks, the whole boiling of them. At this rate there won't be room in my coffin for my poor old corpse, as the list of books I plan to take into eternity is constantly augmented, and will include at least one of the Telegraph beauties or some people will find themselves seriously haunted.
