Product Description

Comedy which takes a look at one long year in the lives of an ostensibly typical, upper-middle-class suburban family. Following a sobering family tragedy the Travises go to pieces. Teenaged son Tim (Emile Hirsch), the black sheep of the family, walks through his life like it's a bad dream. His father Ben (Jeff Daniels) starts treating his wife and children like strangers and completely disengages from the world around him, while his mother Sandy (Sigourney Weaver) takes to smoking pot and letting loose with all the considerable sarcasm she can muster. Meanwhile she wages a bitter fued with the next door neighbour over carefully concealed secrets that threaten to tear the family apart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really very good 10 Sep 2008
I expected this movie to be good but I didn't expect it to be a five star movie. Well, it is. The acting is superb. Sigourney Weaver and Emile Hirsch have the most screen time but the supporting cast is also excellent, with Jeff Daniels, Michelle Williams and Ryan Donowho, whom I haven't heard about before. The performances, together with a good story, made for a movie that was really touching and engaging in a way that, for example, The Squid and the Whale, didn't. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars All American Family 16 Jun 2005
Sigourney Weaver brings back her magic in this ensemble dramatizing a family in crisis. The Travis family's eldest son, a swimming star, unexpectedly commits suicide; forcing the family to either mend it's structure or fall to pieces. Despite the obvious reference to "Ordinary People" this film is much more poignant with plenty of dark humor to keep it from being morbid. The secrets of each family member are slowly revealed throughout the film with clever and believable script writing. Jeff Daniels plays the father to perfection, but the real star is their son Tim, who deals `seemingly' casual maturity with every event. The plot twists make sense as the story is unraveled and it is an original screenplay, but not entirely unfamiliar with the American family life. The previews showed a remarkable scene where Sandy (Sigourney Weaver) is busted for possession of marijuana just when she finds something that will help her deal with her current situation. It's priceless!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sigourney can do no wrong 8 May 2009
I bought this film not knowing much about it but being a massive Sigourney Weaver fan there was no way I was not going to buy it.

I will be honest, the film/storyline itself can at times be dull but the sheer presence of Sigourney on screen and her timing are enough to carry this film through to the end.

Emile Hirsch is also very good. Jeff Daniels seems a bit misplaced and flat.

I recommend this film if you are a fan of Weaver as she has never been on finer form.

3.0 out of 5 stars Superb Sigourney saves silly show? 17 Mar 2014

Well yes and no. Emile Hirsch is as fantastic as he ever has been or will be. The storyline with him and his friend is truly awesome and NEEDS to be seen. Otherwise it's watchable stuff. Just don't go expecting any cheery fun.
