Possibly the Best "images"

Monteux was a friend and associate of Debussy. At a time when most conductors were performing only the central work "Iberia," Monteux recorded the complete "Images." The "Images" should always be performed as a set. Debussy wanted it that way. It should be done that way. One might wish that Monteux has recorded "Images" with a great French orchestra, since the London Symphony has a very "British" sound. In particular, the oboe sticks out--although he plays well, his timbre is just not right. None of this detracts from Monteux's direct-from-the-source authority and conviction in this ineffably exquisite music.
