My first introduction to Jean Michel Jarre was way back in 1984 when someone gave me a copy of 'The Essential', Jarre's first compilation album. 'Images' is also a compilation album, but being much later in his career (1991), it has a larger repertoire to choose samples from.
As an introduction to Jarre's music, 'Images' is not bad. It has the early classics Oxygene 2 and 4, vast soundscapes that soothe the mind, and Equinoxe 5, his stormy synth rock epic. However, mixed in with this come later works including the steel drums of Calypso 1, and the resonating orchestrations of Rendezvous 2. There are also a few new tracks on here (mainly B sides): Eldorado, Globe Trotter and Moon Machine, quirky tracks indeed but they don't shout 'Jarre made me'.
The problem with the album is that many of the tracks have been reduced from their original running time - Ethnicolor for example is only 3:41 where the original track is over eight minutes. I feel this really compromises some of Jarre's most innovative work and does not allow the listener to get into the music. And the running order is not great, neither flowing freely (as told by Jarre in his own notes!) nor feeling like individual parts of a whole piece as his 'proper' albums do.
As a snapshot of Jarre's work to that point in time, it's not bad, but it should have contained some other pieces to be truly representative of what the man is capable of.

This collection of Jarre's best works up to the early 90's has strucked me as a disappointment since the day it came out. Not only are its numbers shortened and some tracks (Equinoxe 4 and Magnetic Fields 2) quite vulgar 're-designed' which makes you wonder if Jarre was not entirely content with the original versions. This album sounds frightening commercial, the individual tracks do not present a flowing order and what justifies the presence of tracks such as Moon machine, London Kid, Computer Weekend and Globetrotter on a Best Of Jarre album is quite beyond me. Mind you, they are not bad at all, but I do find them utterly inferior to his most early masterpieces (which sadly enough are not served enough on this album).
I'm inclined to call this compilation 'The best known Jarre', instead of 'The best of Jarre', and really want to recommend Jarre and music fans to go for the first Essential album (the one released in the early eighties and not the most recent!) to experience a REAL compilation of the best works composed by Jarre. The Images album simply pays unsufficient credit to the genius Jarre, there simply are to many tracks from his rather inferior and inconsistent late 80's and 90's periods where he never really reached the same level of innovation and inspiration that he achieved with Oxygene and Equinoxe.
I really wanted to proclaim this compilation a total success since I feel Jarre is one of the true great geniuses in the instrumental/electronic music genre, but I can't. The reason lies in the fact that compiling tracks for a Best Of album only needs one task, since the tracks to chose from have already been composed and released: selecting the works of the artist which truly deserve a place on this album, and give them a flowing, reasonable order on the tracklist. This album very rarely succeeds in doing just that. A missed opportunity.

Jean Michel Jarre's music first came to my notice in the late 70's and I loved it. It is innovative and very clever. It has a haunting and hypnotic quality. It was very different at that time and is fascinating. Hearing it again today on this CD is still as good as the old days.
There is a very good mix on this CD and I think young people could do their street dancing and robotic moves to this music.
Nice CD for driving in the car. Try it!!

I have followed JMJ for many years and I have collected all of his music books .
This cd is as the title suggests is a collection of many but not all of the concerts featuring the man and his music.
Good to listen to over and over.
