Product Description

Product Description

Almost all parenting books are about helping children deal with the hurts of growing up. Where are the books helping parents deal with the hurts of bringing children from infancy to adulthood and beyond? As ever, Susan Jeffers is breaking new ground. She is convinced that unless you can deal with the distress along the way, you can never embrace the breathlessly astonishing moments of wonder that parenting can provide. Feelings of guilt, anger and hurt need to be healed if true connection and closeness with a child is ever to be felt. And negative feelings are inescapable even for the best of us. Addressing these issues, which many parents may feel guilty about, Susan Jeffers offers her wisdom of experience - with two grown-up children and two stepchildren - together with her usual humour, tips, poignancy and invaluable guidance.

This review is from: I'm OK, You're a Brat (Hardcover)
This was one of the most disappointing parenting products I have come across. I kept reading the very negative attitudes towards parenting, waiting for the cathartic helping hand. Any honest parent knows just how hard it can be. No helping hand came. Instead the author refers to stay at home moms as 'being in a childlike state of dependence' and is wholly disrespectful of their position. She believes that all children should be in childcare. And this is really the only advice she offers anyone stuggling with the ups and downs of parenting. There is no empathy or respect for the journey of a parent. There is no advice for people who can't afford to pay for childcare. Any child/parent problems are due to them being at home together.
I found it all a bit strange until I got to the part where she explains she left her own young children, they were brought up by her first husband. She remarried a man who was abandoned by his mother as a child.
A truly strange insight into her own family dynamics and beliefs.
My advice is to spend your cash on a babysitter and have an hour off from your kids instead of wasting money on this.
