Great book! 30 May 2010
By M.I.
Format:Paperback
This is one of the best books I read this year. I couldn't put it down at times and the author's witty remarks were a pleasure to read.
The narrative style is simple and direct, and so you find yourself wandering along with Hape on the road to Santiago in the middle of mountains and forests, where he shares his thoughts about places, people and feelings. A precious true personal account of the pilgrimage along the Camino, about friendship, about God and the meaning of life, that is really worth reading.

Very enjoyable 14 Oct 2010
By Alex
Format:Paperback
I read this book in German first and later in English. It is one of the most catching books I have read for a long time. The stories are so breath taking and you actually feel with Harpe Kerkeling the pain and the fear he is going through at his walk on the Camino de Santiago. I actually was quite sad, when the book finished. I would highly recommend this book.

What a wonderful book I throughly enjoyed it. I bought this book after having seen the film 'The Way,' starring Martin Sheen and this book like the film captivated me. I like the way the book was also filled with amusing and witty anecdotes surrounding the author's life and how they related to certain parts of the Camino Trail that he travelled along especially as he was on a crossroads in his life when he walked it.
If anyone wants to read a definitive book about the Camino De Santiago this book is definitely the one to read. I felt sad when I finished the book because I became so attached to the author and his trials and tribulations along the trek, the friends he made along the way and the rugged beauty of the Camino de Santiago. But all good things must come to an end and life is a constant journey.
I definitely will walk the Camino De Santiago one day.

Dull
One of the most tedious books I have read. Maybe something was lost in the translation from German. There are references to the author's career as a comedian which add nothing to... Read more

Good, but could have been better
The humour is good (for a German under translation). A good story teller.

I would have liked to see less on the (so called) spiritual side, and more on the factual... Read more

Bought for a friend.
My friend is doing this walk next year so I wanted to buy her a gift to perhaps give her a little in-sight into her trip.

Sorry, but no.
I don't know what this book purports to be, or do. It's not useful in any practical way to would-be pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago; the guy doesn't do enough of it to in any... Read more

It grew on me
I wasn't keen on this book at first as the author wasn't a true pilgrim in the sense that he cheated by using public transport and taking lifts off a farmer, and also using... Read more

Another Companion for Hape
You are gently drawn into the walk sharing Hape's laughter, his pains and aches, his hope and above all his compassionate love of people, including himself.
