Amazon.co.uk Review
In I'm No Angel, Mae West second star vehicle, she's sideshow attraction Tira, "the girl who discovered you don't have to have feet to be a dancer." As usual, West wrote all her own dialogue for the film, and it's full of priceless wisecracks. A crowd of men ogles her as she tosses off a saucy little number, "They Call Me Sister Honky Tonk," swinging her hips phlegmatically. Then she slithers offstage, muttering "Suckers." Bored with life, Tira consults a fortuneteller. "I see a man in your future," he drones. "What, only one?" quips Mae. Tira wants to quit the carnival, so her boss (an unctuous Edward Arnold) makes her a proposition. If she'll become the show's lion tamer, she can meet "the swells." Just one little thing: she's got to put her head in the lion's mouth. (West insisted on performing this stunt herself, to the horror of Paramount Pictures' executives.) Enter Cary Grant as Jack Clayton, an aristocrat who falls for this floozie from the wrong side of the tracks. Some of the film's merriest scenes show Tira and her five black maids having a ball dancing and singing as she prepares for her dates with Jack. (West made it her business to keep as many of her black girlfriends working in movies as possible.) Tira's head maid, Beulah, played by Gertrude Michael, is the object of that momentous line "Oh, Beulah, peel me a grape." Mae slays 'em all in this picture, dressed, as always, in fabulously flamboyant finery. --Laura Mirsky

Most people have heard of Mae West or, at the very least, will be familiar with her most famous sayings “When I’m good I’m very good but when I’m bad I’m better” and “Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me”. Only a few though will have seen the movies that made her the most famous female Hollywood movie star of the 1930s.

Her first starring film “She Done Him Wrong” was the biggest grossing film of 1933 and, allegedly, saved Paramount Pictures from going into bankruptcy. Her co-star was Cary Grant who also appeared in her second film of 1933 “I’m No Angel” in which she plays Tira (“the dancing marvel of the age”) a circus lion tamer whose act hits the big time when she puts her head in the lion’s mouth. This is a contemporary satire on social climbing (“It’s not the men in my life that counts, it’s the life in my men”) and is, in my view, her best film and one which stands alongside classic comedies like Duck Soup, Bringing Up Baby and It’s a Gift. “I wish I could trust you” says Cary. “You can” says Mae, “hundreds have”. Cary: “Do you mind if I get personal?” Mae “Go right ahead, I don’t mind if you get familiar”. To another potential conquest Mae says “I like sophisticated men to take me out”. He replies “Well, I’m not really sophisticated.” Oh, says Mae “You’re not really out yet either”.

If you’ve never seen Mae in action this DVD is an inexpensive way of seeing the great lady at her peak. Then you can treat yourself to the recent Screen Goddesses set which contains six of her movies. As Mae herself said “It’s better to be looked over than overlooked”.
