… the singing has an utterly beguilling freshness. --Gramophone,Feb'12

CD Description

Having focused on music from their home country before, the Norwegian Soloists Choir here present a German programme, featuring two of the most influential composers in 19th-century choral music: Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert. It includes both sacred and secular music, scored for male, female and mixed choir a cappella and accompanied, starting with a selection from Brahmss deservedly popular Zigeunerlieder for mixed choir and piano. A contrast to these settings of Hungarian folk songs is provided by the autumnal Five Songs for mixed choir a cappella a collection of poems dealing with the transience of youth, love and life. The motet Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen, shows Bachs influence on the composer. Schubert is represented with a setting of Psalm 23 for womens choir and piano and Der Gesang der Geister über den Wassern.

I bought this album because it's the only one I could find with the five songs of Brahms Opus 104 on it. It also includes most of Schubert's Gypsy Songs and a couple others by Schubert as well as Brahms - a couple I hadn't heard before. The selection of pieces is great and all are beautifully and dynamically sung. I continue to discover and enjoy more Romantic German choral music and this is a great addition to my other recordings. I would have preferred a CD but it's well worth downloading.
