Interest in illustrating and designing for young people is growing more rapidly than ever. Today s picture-book illustrators and designers are some of the world s most innovative visual artists, pushing the boundaries in terms of traditional and digital tools and techniques. No matter what the medium is, vivid storytelling and clear communication including character development, world building, and the creation of structural patterns remain the hallmark of every successful picture book. Illustrating Children s Picture Books delves into the world of illustrated books for children of all ages, including infants, preschoolers, tweens, and teens. This fully illustrated book provides an international overview of today s top children s illustrators alongside practical, step-by-step instructions on specific creative techniques and design solutions, from traditional drawing, painting, and pen and ink, to digital design and collage. It includes discussions on how to pace content, create emotion, develop a narrative, work with perspective and abstraction, bring a character to life, define an age group, and be culturally specific to an audience.

Excellent resource to get you started in children's illustration. Easy to use and understand, with good instructions on storyboarding, character development and narrative. Also provides info on how to use of various mediums, from traditional techniques like watercolour and gouache to the basics of working digitally with vector-based illustrations. Includes case studies and expert commentary from illustrators already working in the field. Fully illustrated throughout with work in progress as well as fully worked imagery from illustrators all over the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth it...just 22 May 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very well written and I did learn something from it, so I would say that on the whole it was worth it. My only complaint is that the standard of the illustrations used as examples was very poor. I wouldn't have minded this except that there is a sizeable chapter on illustration techniques, which should always leave you feeling inspired - and the results just weren't good enough to do that. A complete beginner might learn something about techniques from it. I bought it because there is a section on digital art that interested me, and that was quite useful (as I'm a complete beginner there). Another useful thing was the testimonies of people in the business - especially those of publishers. Expensive to buy when you add in P&P but for the few valuable bits I'm glad I got it.

Received this as a gift and what an incredible resource. Wonderful layout which touches upon different mediums that connect back to an artist and their work, the history of, examples of processes and supplemental resources which have been useful. Great tool for students and educators especially those curious about the field. Everytime I pick it up I find something new!
