Book Description

27 Jun 2007 0723433976 978-0723433972 3
A concise, colourfully illustrated and highly informative textbook of paediatrics. Written primarily for medical students for their course in clinical paediatrics (6-10 weeks in duration in the UK and worldwide), the book has found a wider audience among nurses, trainee paediatricians preparing for the MRCPCH, and general practitioners preparing for the DCH. Throughout, there is an emphasis on the core fundamentals of paediatrics practice throughout the world, which has contributed to its success in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.

Why is the book so appealing? There are three main reasons: (1) the combined systems/symptoms approach, which is particularly suited to the study of children's illnesses; (2) the amount of detail covered in a very succinct style, making it appropriate for a wide range of students; and (3) the appealing way in which it is written and presented.

The following quotes from student/trainee reviewers explain these reasons even more clearly.

1. The book combines a traditional, systems-based approach with a symptoms-based approach, which is particularly appropriate to paediatrics. To quote from one student's review:

"Having topics such as 'acute abdominal pain', headache' or 'the unconscious child' at the start of a separate section within a chapter, with differentials, aetiologies, clinical signs and investigations, is very useful in getting students to constantly think of the way in which children would present to them in a medical setting. This helps them to design a logical way of thinking about specific presentations, as they are faced in their clinical career."

2. As mentioned above, the book has found a wide readership - from nurses and medical students to trainees in paediatrics. To quote from one trainee's review:

"It is so refreshing to come across a medical textbook that manages to convey key points, provide additional detail at a more advanced level, and make the acquisition of knowledge a pleasurable experience through interesting and varied presentation...This book is remarkable in that it manages to pitch itself at both an undergraduate level and at that of a paediatric SHO coming up to membership exams (especially clinical). Each time I have re-read it, I have taken in more information than on the previous occasion..."

3. The varied style of the book and the use of many different types of illustrations all contribute to its success. To quote from another review:

"The way the book is presented is integral to its success. For those...who tire easily reading textbooks, the bright and varied layout is extremely important. There is a good balance of photos, tables, flowcharts and text - and ...many people need variety in order to be able to assimilate and retain information effectively."

Review

"Difficult concepts are clearly explained, lists (an inescapable fact of learning medicine) are invariably made easy to digest in highlighted boxes and great use is made of section summaries which reiterate and emphasise the key learning points (useful for that last minute revision). The book, as the title suggests, is lavishly illustrated, both with diagrams as well as clinical photographs."
"Paeditrics.info"

"An excellent text for students, interns and residents in training. A very didactic textbook. Each chapter has tables, illustrations and photos in colour, and a short bibliography, of high technical production.?
"Pediatric Endocrinology Reviews (PER). Vol 5. No 3. March 2008"

BMA Book Awards 2008 - Highly Commended
"Illustrated Textbook of Paediatrics is deservedly known as 'the' textbook for the undergraduate medical student who is venturing into paediatrics. It covers the topics the student needs to know in enough detail to give them a sensible grounding in the specialty. It is easy to access, dip into, or read from cover to cover. For the ever-advancing use of the internet in daily medical life, the publisher has introduced an online access with interactive facilities. Overall: an essential purchase for medical students, GP trainees, paediatric specialist nurses, and anyone looking to brush up on their paediatrics."

Highly Commended at The Royal Society of Medicine & The Society of Authors' Medical Book Awards
"An excellent textbook for students, superbly illustrated.?

"Although aimed at medical students, this is also ideal for a GP and covers most of the territory that a primary health care team needs to know about paediatrics. All the important paediatric areas are well covered. Health visitors and practice nurses will also find this book helpful in their everyday work. I can't think of a single criticism of the book. This is ideal for a practice or personal library for a GP who just wants an up to d

4.0 out of 5 stars Check Review Dates - Best on the market 21 Mar 2009
By mmcc
Format:Paperback
Don't listen to the out-dated AMAZON reviews of the 2nd edition. This book is currently the best thing on the market.

I naively failed to notice the dates listed with the reviews and the fact that Amazon displays the top reviews from before 2007 - the year of publication of the 3rd edition.
As a consequence I bought the well-reviewed direct market competitor and was sorely disappointed by the lack of organisation and structure.

In seeeking a more structured, systems-based and at times detailed text, I eventually returned the alternate title and purchased Lissauer and Clayden's 3rd edition. The structure, organisation and presentation of the book is systematic and covers all the large pathologies involved in paediatric practice as well as interesting asides and explorations of the less biomedical aspects of child health in separate chapters.
There is no specific scheme used (Paediatrics isn't a surgical specialty afterall) and there may be finer biochemical and pathological detail missing but it is hard to find a book for undergraduate study that is as wide ranging and well organised.

Don't 2nd-guess this book.

This book contains a lot of information and if you're able to sit down and read through long sections of wordy text then you might like it but the organisation of the information is poor.

There is a lot of waffle that overcomplicates and obscures simple concepts and after reading a section I have been left with things that aren't clear, missing bits of info and a feeling of 'okay, but what about...?' Additionally there is a lot of repetition and several topics that need a summary are touched on in several different chapters or places without ever being pinned down properly.

What it does do is take the time to explain some of the aspects of paediatric care that are more than the simple presentation/investigations and diagnosis and that you might not get in a barebones/revision style text book. This means that for someone working through an undergraduate paediatrics placement it is nice to slowly work through (if you've got a lot of time to sit down and read) and the chapter structure supports this approach.

Using this book for revision, however, is a different matter and something that i've found almost impossible - the main text takes far too long to get the point and lacks useful lists and bullet points while the end of chapter summary boxes are at the opposite end of the spectrum and usually just a differential diagnosis list that gives no indication of what's important and what is not.

On balance, I feel this book overcomplicates the topic and although it has the value of covering all bases I don't think this is useful as it is very difficult to assimilate when it is this poorly organised.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overrated 27 July 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The most overrated medical textbook that I think I have come across. I've heard lots of people say how good this book is, but there is not enough information by a long way on many topics for undergraduate level, and if it isn't written for undergraduates then who is the book written for? The organisation of the book I found to be a bit illogical, but perhaps some people might find it organised to their liking.
The photographs are usually helpful and illustrate conditions well, but the diagrams often will not have supporting text, which makes them almost useless if you are reading about a condition you have little experience of.
In summary, not a book I would especially recommend.
