This is the second book I have bought about the Crusades (The first being Thomas Asbridge's excellent 'The First Crusade: A New History') and I am really enjoying reading it. It is a large book covering all of the nine 'offical' crusades giving information not just about the crusaders but also their Islamic enemies. A part of the book I found particularly valuable was the section giving a history of the Military Orders in the Kingdom of Jerusalem such as the famous Knights Templar and Knights Hospitaller, as well as one of two of the lesser known orders. The book is full of illustrations (both modern and medieval) which really bring the period to life and give you some idea of what the people would have looked and dressed like.
Of course it gives an overview of the crusades and does not go into hugely in-depth descriptions of everything but nevertheless a good purchase for anyone interested in the history of the crusades and how it has shaped modern relations between east and west.
