Bought this book to learn to make some British classics- I did not want just English recipes or Scottish/Welsh/Irish- I wanted all in one and this book was perfect for that purpose. Each recipe is accompanied by lovely pictures of parts of the process as well as the finished dish, and even features some history on the dish. Tried some of the recipes already with yummy results!! Excellent book- would recommend to anyone who wants to learn to make some traditional British food!!

Recipe Encyclopedia 18 April 2012

This seems like an excellent book. I have not tested any of the recipes yet but they impress as good, simple straightforward cooking. So many recipe writers take an entirely satisfactory dish and put in unnecessary fancy stuff to try and make their work more interesting.

Great overview of British cuisine. 17 Nov 2010
By James Briscoe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
It is a good overview of British cuisine but an encyclopedia?... It's good but that's pushing it. It could be a better and a more exhaustive tome if it addressed regional cooking in a more comprehensive manner but that would probably push it to 1000+ pages rather than the modest 512.;^) All that being said I like having it on the shelf and if I want a recipe for bubble and squeak, colcannon, steak and kidney pie, or figgy pudding it's got it.
Update edit(1/8/11): I find myself going to this book more often than not, just to find another tasty recipe to try. It gets used a lot. I would buy it again.

Nice but missing some obvious dishes 30 Dec 2011
By Paul - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Being a Brit now living in the US I was more than happy to get this as a Christmas gift. For anyone looking for a solid introduction to British foods this is a great book and will keep you busy in the kitchen for long time.

However...

I was a little surprised to see many dishes I had expected to be included missing. Spotted Dick, Steak & Kidney pie, Scotch Eggs etc are/were regular appearances on our dinner table as kids and all are sadly missing as are many more.

So, I would rate it highly as a general book but less so as an 'encyclopedia'. This might sound harsh but the title will lure some that expect an all encompassing tome which this certainly isn't.
