Book Description

4 April 2002

Vonny lives on the island of Martha's Vineyard with her husband Andre and son Simon. Their neighbour Elizabeth, a woman in her seventies, falls from an upstairs window and her granddaughter Jody is summoned to nurse her through her convalescence.

The scene is set for a magical story of love and loneliness, of terror and human frailty, of the mystery and grace of ordinary experience. Alice Hoffman's ability to fuse the domestic and the mythic in a narrative of such gentle yet magnetic force confirms her stature as one of the most gifted of American novelists.

Product Description

"Alice Hoffman hits bulls-eyes on the incomprehension between the young and the old, of the magic and pain of ordinary life. She is erotic and romantic, funny and clever and humane" (Philip Howard The Times)

"A beautiful book. Fresh and dauntless" (Toni Morrison)

"Compelling...Illumination Night is a novel of convincing psychological realism" (Marge Piercy)

"An authentic prose stylist of a high order" (Boston Globe)

"A shimmering, radiant tale" (Publishers Weekly)

Book Description

'Daringly mixing comedy with tragedy, and the quotidian with the fabulous, she has created a narrative that somehow makes myth out of the sticky complexities of contemporary marriage... Hoffman writes so simply about human passions that her characters are branded on to one's memory' - New York Times

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful multiple character study 10 July 2006
For those who have read Alice Hoffman before, you'll know what to expect, although this book is more traditionally structured than many in that it actually has chapters. For those who haven't read her before, this is a good book to introduce yourself to her way of writing. This book doesn't exactly have a plot; it follows a group of neighbours through the cycle of years, charting the changes in their relationships and their characters, delicately exploring their lives. Hoffman pays the same attention to Daniel, the little boy, as she does to the Giant who lives a few miles away in a sheltered farmhouse. She never judges anyone, revealing their motivations and emotions in such a way that you end up loving them all. Hoffman's style is very distinctive, people either love it or hate it; if you fall in love, there are plenty of other Hoffman books for you to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written 6 July 2012
By Susanne
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Alice Hoffman writes in a deceptively simple way - she writes about the lives of ordinary people with a clear, underlying passion. You get drawn into the story as if they were your neighbours and friends and this book had me reading until the small hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 3 Jan 2005
What can I say about this book?
I started reading it and within the first page I was captured.
Hoffman's writing style flows beautifully. Her descriptions of life are piercingly exact. No one writes quite like this. The story is beautifully told and the characters are brought to life. This is a tale of Life, Love, Sadness and human nature.
My only dissapointment was that I finshed the book!

A wonderful book, charged with emotion and the magic of everyday life. Hoffman effortlessly captures the both the vulnerability and the intensity of the human spirit. Impossible to put down and beautifully written.
