Although one of the purposes of this gorgeous book was to serve as a catalogue for a (stunning) Royal Academy of Arts exhibition, it is far more than that, and far more satisfying. The book is extremely well conceived and constructed, thoroughly researched and lucidly written, by a group of the top experts in the field. The historical context both political and artistic, of this phenomenal burst of miniature painting in Flanders, is well and accessibly laid out. The different periods within it, the different workshops and the various artists, emerge in a clear light. Throughout, of course, the stars are the actual miniatures themselves, reproduced stunningly well, often at real size. This book is a treasure trove, a gallery, a wonderful course in the history of art, all rolled into one. And a source of sheer visual delight.

Having just been to the Royal Academy of Arts exhibition - "illuminating the renaissance", this book is a fantastic and complete representation of the extraordinary items on display. The exhibits are beautifully reproduced on the printed page in colour and on good quality paper. There are full notes for each exhibit. This is a must for any one who would like to know more about this noble art of illumination.
