On certain games two particular squares absolutely refuse to accept numbers, since its only for my personal use its ok, but would be very disappointing if bought for a present. Otherwise its great.

My husband got one of these about 4 year ago and I've been looking for one for me for 2 year.
I bought a similar product from M&S but got a refund on that because it was too easy.

Newer model, easy to see and use 28 Dec 2006
By S.Price - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my sister, who has difficulty seeing due to cataracts in both eyes. She is a Sudoku addict, and had been solving puzzles with pencil and paper until I gave her the electronic version. With the backlight feature, and different levels of contrast, I hoped that the handheld game would be easier for her to see.

Because of the mixed reviews I had seen, I asked her for feedback about this game. When buying, please note that there may be more than one model of this game available. Some of the reviews refer to older model(s). My comments refer to model 20720, Illuminated Sudoku Mega Screen. The unit measures about 4" wide by 5 1/2" long, with screen size of about 2 1/2" wide by 3 1/4 in" long.

My sister says the display is easy to see. The screen is fully illuminated, with orange backlighting, and 9 levels of contrast.

There are two modes of play, Beginner and Advanced. Each mode offers four difficulty levels, from 1 (easiest) to 4 (most difficult). So far my sister has been playing in Beginner mode, level 4. In this mode, if you put a number in the incorrect box, the number flashes to let you know that it is in the wrong place. To clear an entry, just touch the "C" at the top of the screen, then touch the box on the grid to be cleared.

My sister has been playing this game every night since Christmas, and she really likes it. It was worth every cent -- and then some!

This model not recommended 7 Dec 2005
By Gary E. Hayman - Published on Amazon.com
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Great idea but more tech development is needed for this version. Screen reflects too much outside light obfuscating the LED numbers. The numbers have low contrast and their improvement is not achieved by the technique suggested to where they can be easily seen. The lines between the groups of 9 square blocks are not prominent enough making block determination difficult. The unit is actually hard to see clearly to be enjoyable to use. I would skip this model and investigate other manufacturers editions.

Bad Screen Technology 7 Dec 2005
By Game Lover - Published on Amazon.com
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Being a big Sudoku fan, I couldn't wait to receive this as a gift, so I bought it for myself. There is not much difference between the conrast of the grid and numbers to that of the screen. The inability to read the handheld version makes it a waste of money. I promptly repacked mine and returned it to the store.

Sudoku puzzles are very Fun so I reccomened you skip the handheld version and buy yourself a book!

Not a very good toy 7 Dec 2005
By Sudoku Geek - Published on Amazon.com
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I addict to Sudoku. So when I saw this game, I could not resist. I was very disapppointed with the display. Difficult to see the numbers. You could see yourself in the display better than you could see the numbers. It could hurt your eyes if playing for a long time. It is not worth the money. I am going to return the game.

Take your play style to the next level 1 Dec 2005
By Pradeep Avadhani - Published on Amazon.com
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I was pleasantly surprised to see this one when a friend gifted me this. It is very attractive and looks cool. All my excitement to explore this toy kinda bit dampened the moment I got the this powered up. It's the display, lack of backlight to be specific. In other words, this won't work in dark. Without the backlight, reflection on the glass is very distracting. In addition, in playing mode, the digital background of the cell indicating the number for unfilled cell also can be distracting. That's why this item gets 3 stars. If one can ignore this inconvenience and get used to this gadget, it's very simple to play.

I like the intuitive interface. Stylus based operation is simple. Users can choose different levels for varied levels of difficulty. I found even the basic or level 1 to be not that easy .

I look forward to version with a backlight.
