Ever since their epic 1989 debut, altars of madness, Morbid angel have been one of the greatest and most influential death metal bands around. Who brought us classics such as blessed are the sick, covenant and the aformentioned debut album. Then after some slightly weaker albums including 2003's heretic, and with the return of original vocalist Dave Vincent, this album was supposed to be Morbid angel's return to form. It isn't.
Out of 10 tracks, only 3 could be considered death metal, and even those aren't exactly iconic. The rest of the album is a strange mash up of industrial metal with slightly ridiculous lyrics and song names.
One of my biggest problems with this album though is not the songs themselves, but that it is too overproduced, the vocals aren't as growling as on previous albums, and the guitars don't sound as evil as they should.
The main industrial style tracks are too extreme! In which the band chose to use triggered and sampled drum beats, and to some extent they work, but they won't please many fans.
I am morbid, sounds like Morbid angel trying to play Def leppard songs in there own death metal style, minus the intense speed, also the lyrics and song title are way to simplistic, not a bad track, but feels out of place.
Destructos vs the earth, this song is incredibly industrial influenced, with its midpaced beat and chanting/ talking lyrics, as well as a pretty cliched lyrical choice. While I can enjoy this song to a certain extent, it's too long, still an interesting idea.
Finally, the song which everyone seems to hate is radikult, while the lyrics are almost laughable, I actually enjoyed this song, probably because I can appreciate experimentation, and enjoy industrial metal.
I can't help thinking that this album was realeased at the wrong tiime, this was the time for a death metal hellride. I also think I would be more interested in this album if it was released under a different name.
So overall, I wouldn't recommend this album to die hard MA fans or die hard death metal fans, however if you like industrial music, are open minded and don't mind major style changes, then give this album a go.
