Product Description

Product Description
Joanne Baldwin is a Weather Warden. The Wardens Association has been around pretty much forever. Some Wardens control fire, others control earth, water or wind - and the most powerful can control more than one element. Without them, humanity would be wiped off the face of the planet. But now Joanne is on the run from another kind of storm: accusations of corruption and murder. Her only hope is Lewis, the most powerful Warden. Unfortunately, he is also on the run, having stolen three bottles of Djinn and become the most wanted man on earth. Joanne must find him, and find him fast, as some really bad weather is closing in...

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, 13 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Whoever knew the weather was so interesting. This is a fast pacy book, with plenty of twists and turns especially in the weather. Interesting engaging characters and good plot. Joanne Baldwin is the weather warden on the run, everyone thinks she's committed murder. The Djinn's are wonderful and there's a good smattering of romance. If you like Jim Butcher, Tanya Huff, Kim Harrison and Kelley Armstrong then you should like this. There's a lot of backstory, but its drip fed into the plot and relevant, so it doesnt spoil the pace. Great first novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun fantasy, 30 May 2006
By Helen Hancox "Auntie Helen" (Essex, England) - See all my reviews

I really enjoyed this book. I'd read the reviews on Amazon and thought that the plot might be a little complicated, but that wasn't the case at all. Yes, we are entering a world with weather, fire and earth wardens, demons, djinn and more, but it's all introduced slowly and works well.

What was so much fun about this book was that it is, in some ways, a road trip book. Thelma and Louise with only Thelma. Our heroine Joanne drives 1000 miles across America to escape those trying to strip her of her powers, or worse, because she murdered someone, and towards the one person she believes can help her. Joanne spends a lot of time wisecracking in her mind (thus the first person narrative works really well) and in this she comes across as rather a Stephanie Plum character (by the author Janet Evanovich) which was a delight.

Joanne seems to have got to know some very interesting people in her career as a weather warden and we meet many of them. Although the point of this book isn't characterisation and character growth, there's a certain amount of this as she dashes across America.

All in all I thought this was a great read and I've already ordered the next 3 in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars thoroughly enjoyed it, 15 Sep 2004

This is the first book by Rachel Caine that I've read, but it definitely won't be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed Ill Wind. I have a read a lot of books over the years, and I'm a bit of a fantasy and paranormal fiction junky. This book gave me my fix and then some! I don't think I've read a book quite like this one. It's not just the theme of weather working magicians called wardens that make this different, it's the way Djinn are used like sentient power amplifiers. These slaves can do fabulous things, but they are really tricky. When you order them to do something, you had better be really really specific with your orders or watch out!
