|1. I'll Stand By You|
|2. Real Life|
'I'll Stand By You' covers a classic Pretenders song and, as is now becoming traditional for Girls Aloud, illustrates their versatility by being completely different to any of their other releases. In spirit, it represents a return to the slower, more ballad-like territory of 'Life Got Cold' - although 'Life Got Cold' wasn't really a ballad at all, of course... unlike their last cover ('Jump'), the Girls have kept changes to a minimum and have produced a pretty straightforward cover - a smart move, as the changes that made 'Jump' such a hit just wouldn't have worked here.
How does it compare to the classic original that I have adored for ages? In some ways, it is better that the original - I think the song works better with five talented vocalists rather than just one, for instance; it also suits Girls Aloud's vocal tone very nicely as well. This is a nice cover that manages to more or less preserve the warm, rather heartfelt sentiment of the original. As for the video, it's just gorgeous - 'nuff said.
Top marks to Girls Aloud for taking on such a song and doing it justice; it should surely secure them another Number One placing.
Exactly a year since their last cover version, which was of course "Jump!", the girls are back with another one. This time they've taken The Pretenders' smash hit "I'll Stand By You" and have covered it really quite well, the feeling from the original is still there, and the girls vocals, as always, are amazing.
After a string of #2's and #3's, this single could put finally put the girls back where they belong at that #1 spot. After all, it's for charity.
