Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Released nearly a decade after Zevon's first best-of (A Quiet Normal Life), I'll Sleep When I'm Dead provides a more comprehensive overview of the off-centre California songsmith's fitful career. The first disc of the 44-song, two-CD set nearly duplicates the earlier retrospective, dropping only one song ("Ain't That Pretty at All") and tossing in the likes of "Hasten Down the Wind", "Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School", and live versions of "Mohammed's Radio" and "Jeannie Needs a Shooter" from Zevon's early, most popular period. Disc two cherry-picks highlights from the artist's more problematic but periodically inspired late 1980s and '90s recordings, tossing in such oddities as the Hindu Love Gods' spirited remake of Prince's "Raspberry Beret" (HLG is Zevon backed by the instrumentalists from R.E.M.) and live takes of "The French Inhaler" and "The Indifference of Heaven". Thorough and smartly sequenced, Sleep provides the uninitiated an intro into the work of a true original and adds enough mislaid gems to please steadfast followers. --Steven Stolder

Having recently discovered Warren Zevon and enjoyed his new album "Life'll Kill Ya" I have been delighted to find this wonderful collection of previous material. I find the consistency of wit and wry humour to be a continous pleasure on this album. So many of the songs are worthy of mention that it is impossible to single out a few. I wonder how many pop stars could produce a 44 track "greatest hits" album of such quality. If you enjoy a slightly offbeat view of our world then get this album.

I came to hear about Warren Zevon when the writer Iain Banks listed him asone of his favourites on Radio 4. This tip led me to thankfully discoverone of the most talented and seriously under-rated musicians going. Thisanthology is rarely far from my CD player - it's chock-full of great songsand lyrics, and the booklet that accompanies it brings out the storiesbehind the songs, and the warmth and affection that other artists held forWarren Zevon. From this anthology, I went on to discover Warren's laterrecordings, culminating in his final album "The Wind". This, plus theaccompanying DVD are also essential purchases for Zevon enthusiasts. Youwon't be disappointed with this 2 disc set.

This double CD is absolutely superb, and is a satisfying and well chosen selection from a wealth of fantastic material. Zevon is quite simply a genius, combining rare intelligence, wit and humour with awesome instrumental talents. It's almost unbelievable that he has always had such a lamentably low profile given his unique gifts. The songs on this album demonstrate his diversity and originality, and show facets of his complex personality, ranging from cynicism, black humour and paranoia to poignancy, passion and sweetness. The intriguing sleeve notes that accompany this compilation give more insight into the fascinating character and irreverent humour, which make Zevon's live performances so rewarding.
