I've read pretty much all that this author has done in her Others series, apart from Eternal Hunter, which isn't available through my library. I didn't want to take a chance on an unknown author and start tracking down her back catalogue, but I was pleasantly surprised by her offerings, and very impressed with this one, so much so that I will get her next in the series.
You don't have to read all of the series, as the tales are complete on their own, but past leads do crop up so it is always nice to have a catch-up. This tale was very slightly different as the books mainly tend to have one Other and one human as the leads, but in this, the female lead becomes Other.
The blurb on amazon pretty much tells the tale, but what it doesn't let on is how romantic it is under all the slaying and danger: Simon is an Alpha male 'made' vampire, whereas Dee is a 'born' vampire and he realises from the very start what this strong, initially human female means to him and goes about showing his feelings in his protectiveness and how he is always there for her, though she cannot and does not trust him, him having shown up on her patch out of the blue. He always puts her safety before his, and on at least two occasions literally is dying for her. He's not afraid to voice his feelings, and in fact, I can't remember Dee voicing hers, though by her actions and mannerisms, she shows Simon that she does love him. He didn't ask for the words and didn't seem to need them, being content with the way in which she showed her inner self and vulnerabilities. Yes, Dee had been hurt many times, emotionally and physically and Simon totally got her.
The romantic element for me made this a 5* tale, whereas in the past I think I've probably given the tales a 3/4*, and yes, I am now going to preorder more in the author's Other series. I am not so sure about her new series out this month, as the books are barely out yet they're going for a bargain basement price...but who knows.
