Biography

It's not easy to hit a target when you aren't sure what exactly your quarry looks—or sounds—like. Don't misunderstand: Liam Finn knew what he and co-producer Burke Reid wanted to accomplish with FOMO, the follow-up to the New Zealand dynamo's 2008 breakout I'll Be Lighting. But they also recognized that capturing that je nais sais quoi that makes or breaks ... Read more in Amazon's Liam Finn Store

Well i must say that this is a really fantastic album. from pounding fuzz riffs to mellow gentle melodies Liam Finn has created an album to be proud of. We have to remember this music is coming from a 24 year old who has played basically all instruments on the album as well as engineering it. The single Better to Be is a super opener to the album, along with songs like ill be lightening, gather to the chapel and the upbeat music moves my feet. You definitley wouldn't see James Morrison or anyone in around Finns age group writing so many emotionally charged songs. May it continue!

'I'll Be Lightning' is a cracking solo debut from Betchadupa's Liam Finn, and in many ways a natural successor to his father Neil's solo albums, (although I couldn't imagine Neil Finn singing 'Girl you seem so nice, but I'll be gone by morning').

In his own right though, Liam is a stunning artist, with a rich meaningful voice, and memorable lyrics ('You're a dab hand at a million things, but you know what you're good for'), aswell as the ability to play any instrument he sees. It all adds up to a varied and well paced album which covers every aspect of modern independent music. There's the stormy, bassy 'Better To Be', the folksy 'Fire In Your Belly', and the chaotic 'Lead Balloon' (which reminds me of 'Locked Out').

Outstanding tracks worth a listen before deciding if you like the album are: 'Better To Be', 'Second Chance', and 'Wide Awake On The Voyage Home' - a brilliant downbeat song about realising that you're falling in love 'I don't know what to do, as by myself I lie awake. Tell me love isn't true - that it's just a trick to procreate'.

It's hard to find a weak link on the album, although lullaby does send me to sleep. The rest of the album though is enough to keep anyone interested, and at this rate, people will soon forget who Liam's father was and treat him, as he well deserves, as his own prodigious talent.

I can't wait to hear this album in it's entirety. I have heard a few songs from it and it's obvious that Liam has inherited his brilliant dad's talents (Crowded House/Neil Finn)
Liam's voice is an exact mix of his dad's and uncle Tim's.
Although comparison is inevitable I don't want this to be purely a review based on that. Liam is young and has a clear intelligence which shines through in the sensitive lyrics of his songs. He is obviously not afraid to play as many instruments as he can manage and to experiment in order to get the sound he wants.
Hopefully this will be the first of many solo albums and the beginning of a career as long and successful as the older Finn generation. Who knows maybe one day there will be a father/son collaboration too, what could be better?

Sublime first offering from Liam Finn. Chock full of outstanding songwriting, it's hard to believe this is a debut solo album. Track two, Second Chance and the live shows anthem I'll Be Lightning being two of the best. I gave this a listen due to being a big fan of his dad, Neil, but found Liam more than capable of holding his own, even within his own mega talented family. Saw him live last year and it brings a whole different dimension to these songs. ACE!
