Doris Troy, sister of playwright and radio personality, Vy Higginson, was best known for her R&B hit "Just One Look" (#10 US Billboard Top 100 and #3 US R&B). She also captivated audiences in England where she did a lot of sessions with countless musicians, and along with Madeline Bell, and Lesley Duncan sang backup for Dusty Springfield on "The Middle Of Nowhere" and many of the tracks on Dusty's "Ev'rything's Coming Up Dusty". However, Doris Troy, sometimes referred to as "Mamma Soul" had the vocal ability to sing soul, blues, pop and gospel; thus carving out a solo career. This 26 track anthology highlights her recordings from 1960-1996, along with extensive liner notes with great photos. Personally I think the entire CD is excellent, however, due to space I will share some of my favorites with you.
The CD opens with the soulful upbeat "I'll Do Anything (He Wants Me To Do)", an early composition by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. "Just One Look" (track#3), which she co-wrote, speaks for itself and has been covered by countless musicians (The Hollies, Linda Ronstadt, Bryan Ferry to name a few). "Whatcha' Gonna Do About It" (track #4) is a funky gospel song that charted #102 on US Billboard Top 100; #21 US R&B; #37 UK). "What A Night, Night, Night" (track #5), one of her earlier recordings (1961), is a uptempo, finger snapping R&B/Pop tune that is fun to listen to. "Tell Him I'm Not Home" (track #8) a duet with Chuck Jackson, was a popular R&B song in 1963, even though Doris' name did not appear on the label (read liner notes for more details). "Tomorrow Is Another Day" (track #10) is a cute, finger popping R&B song that shows Doris' ability to change rythms and keys with no problem and charted #118 on US. "Lazy Days (When Are You Coming Home)" (track #10) has a gospel sound and gives Doris a chance to show her dynamic vocal ability. I mention "Please Little Angel" because it is a nice ballard co-written with Gregory Carroll and newcomers Ashford & Simpson; charted #128 US.
Some of my other favorites include: the gut pleading, gut wrenching "One More Chance" (track #14), the fun sounding uptempo call and response on "Beg Me"(track#15) with Chuck Jackson, the foot stomping gospel/pop "Hurry" (track #16), the soulful "He's Qualified" (track #19), country rock infused "Ain't That Cute" (track #20), gospel influenced "You Tore Me Up Inside" (track #21), the funky "Don't Tell Your Mama" (track#22) and the disco sounding "Can't Hold On" (track#23).
I can't say enough about this wonderful collection, although I could not review every song at length, I think there is enough diverse material here to sastify any listener, especially those who loved the voice of the dynamic Doris Troy. Fortunately the stage musical "Mamma, I Want To Sing" based on her life was co-wriiten with her sister, Vy Higginson and ran for 1,500 performances at the Heckscher Theater in Harlem, NY. Sadly Doris Troy died in 2004 of emphysema at her home in Las Vegas at 67, but her strong, soulful voice will live on forever in collections such as this.
